What is remote construction finance?

Remote construction finance refers to managing the financial aspects of construction projects while working from a location outside of the construction site or company office. This role often involves overseeing budgets, processing invoices, handling payments, and tracking project expenses using digital tools and software. Remote construction finance professionals collaborate with contractors, suppliers, and project managers through online communication platforms, ensuring financial operations run smoothly. The job requires strong organizational skills, proficiency in construction accounting software, and the ability to analyze financial data remotely.

How does a remote construction finance professional typically collaborate with on-site teams and project managers?

Remote Construction Finance professionals work closely with on-site teams and project managers by leveraging digital communication tools, project management software, and regular virtual meetings. They are responsible for monitoring budgets, processing invoices, and ensuring financial compliance, often relying on real-time data shared by field teams. Maintaining clear and proactive communication is key to resolving discrepancies and keeping projects on track financially. Building trusting relationships with both finance and construction staff helps facilitate smooth collaboration across locations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote construction finance professional, and why are they important?

To excel in Remote Construction Finance, you need a strong background in accounting, financial analysis, and construction cost management, often supported by a degree in finance or accounting. Familiarity with construction management software, ERP systems like Sage or Procore, and financial reporting tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help professionals stand out in managing budgets and collaborating with project stakeholders remotely. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate financial oversight, compliance, and successful project delivery in a remote environment.

Job description

Director of Commercial Construction Operations David Nice Builders | Toano / Williamsburg, Virginia Area

David Nice Builders is seeking a seasoned construction executive to lead our Commercial Division asDirector of Commercial Construction Operations.

This is a high-visibility senior leadership role with full P&L accountability, reporting directly to the President and Vice President. You will set strategy, lead project delivery, develop the team, and drive growth across private, federal, public-sector, and design-build work.

We are looking for a decisive, high-integrity leader who wants real ownership and the opportunity to shape a growing division.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the Commercial Division's annual operating plan and strategy aligned with company growth goals.
  • Provide executive oversight on all active projects, on-time, on-budget, high-quality delivery. Chair project reviews and serve as the escalation point for critical issues.
  • Lead early-stage budgeting, constructability reviews, pricing strategy, and client presentations for design-build opportunities.
  • Directly lead, coach, and develop project managers and field leadership. Build bench strength and foster a culture of accountability, craftsmanship, integrity, and client service.
  • Own the full division P&L, enforce financial controls, deliver strong margins, and partner with Finance on forecasting.
  • Build and maintain key client relationships, drive repeat business, and support pursuit of federal and public-sector work.
  • Champion risk mitigation, safety culture, quality standards, and operational excellence across the division.
  • Drive process improvements and technology adoption, while collaborating closely with Estimating, Pre-Construction, Finance, HR, and the Civil Division.

What You Bring Required:

  • 15+ years of progressive commercial construction experience, including at least 5 years in senior leadership.
  • Proven success delivering complex commercial projects across general contracting, CM-at-risk, and design-build delivery methods.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience managing division-level or multi-project profitability.
  • Proficiency with construction project management software (Procore/Viewpoint, Primavera P6 or MS Project).

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or related field.
  • Experience with federal or public-sector contracting.
  • DBIA certification or deep design-build background.
  • Established industry network in commercial construction.

Leadership Profile You are a strategic thinker who executes with urgency. You build trust quickly with clients and teams, communicate clearly at all levels, and model accountability and craftsmanship. You thrive with autonomy and want to make a visible impact on both project outcomes and the long-term success of the division.

Why Join David Nice Builders?

  • Opportunity to truly shape and grow a respected Commercial Division with direct executive visibility.
  • High degree of autonomy and ownership in a values-driven company that prioritizes integrity, relationships, and quality.
  • Competitive compensation package: $130,000 - $170,000 base salary (with potential to stretch higher for the right candidate) plus performance incentives.
  • Relocation assistance available for strong candidates moving to the area.
  • Projects throughout the Hampton Roads and greater Virginia region - not limited to a single remote site.
  • Collaborative environment with direct access to senior leadership and a company that values long-term relationships over short-term wins.

Location Base location is in the Toano / Williamsburg, Virginia area (James City County), with projects across the Hampton Roads region and beyond. The role requires regular presence on projects and in the office but offers the lifestyle benefits of the Williamsburg area (history, water access, lower density) while still being within reasonable reach of Richmond and the broader Hampton Roads amenities.

Ready to build something exceptional? If you are a strategic construction leader who wants to own a division's P&L and growth trajectory while delivering "construction art" through excellence and relationships, we want to hear from you.

Please submit your resume and a brief note explaining why you are interested in leading DNB's Commercial Division. Confidential inquiries are welcome.

David Nice Builders is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
