The MDM Functional Lead is the senior functional authority responsible for configuring, testing, deploying, and supporting SAP master data solutions that enable enterprise data governance, operational excellence, and business transformation. The role translates MDM architecture, governance standards, and business requirements into sustainable SAP configuration, functional specifications, workflows, validations, controls, and operating processes.

Working closely with the MDM Architect, business process owners, SAP functional teams, Enterprise Architecture, and technical delivery teams, the MDM Functional Lead ensures master data solutions align with approved future-state designs and support SAP S/4HANA implementations, business integrations, acquisitions, and ongoing optimization. This role serves as the primary functional escalation point for complex SAP master data design and configuration decisions.

Job Location

This role will work remote based in the US.

Job Responsibilities

  • Own functional design and configuration for SAP master data capabilities across Material Master, Business Partner, Customer, Supplier/Vendor, Finance, and other assigned enterprise data domains.
  • Translate MDM architecture principles, data governance requirements, and approved business rules into scalable SAP configuration and functional designs.
  • Analyze business requirements, identify cross-functional impacts, and recommend SAP-standard, configuration-based solutions whenever practical.
  • Configure and maintain workflows, approvals, validations, field controls, defaulting logic, status management, and other controls that support data quality and governance objectives.
  • Prepare and maintain functional specifications, configuration documentation, decision records, process flows, and traceability to approved requirements.
  • Assess proposed system changes for impacts to master data objects, integrations, reporting, security roles, downstream processes, and existing design standards.
  • Partner with the MDM Architect to convert enterprise data models, standards, ownership structures, and governance controls into executable SAP solutions.
  • Ensure SAP master data configuration supports consistent definitions, standardized processes, data stewardship, auditability, and enterprise controls.
  • Facilitate design workshops with business process owners and functional leads to define future-state master data requirements and resolve design decisions.
  • Maintain alignment between master data design and the business processes supported across Supply Chain, Procurement, Finance, Operations, Sales, and Manufacturing.
  • Act as the functional escalation point for complex master data issues, design conflicts, configuration defects, and cross-functional dependencies.
  • Develop functional test scenarios and expected results for configuration, integrations, workflows, controls, and end-to-end master data processes.
  • Lead or support System Integration Testing (SIT), User Acceptance Testing (UAT), regression testing, defect triage, and deployment readiness activities.
  • Validate that converted and newly created master data functions correctly within SAP business processes and downstream integrations.
  • Support cutover planning, configuration migration, data conversion validation, go-live, hypercare, and transition to steady-state support.
  • Provide on-site support during critical workshops, deployments, integrations, and SAP go-live events as business needs require.
  • Serve as the primary functional liaison among MDM, business stakeholders, SAP functional teams, technical teams, project leadership, and implementation partners.
  • Provide clear recommendations and trade-off analysis that balance enterprise standardization, business requirements, maintainability, risk, and delivery timelines.
  • Coordinate master data design dependencies across functional workstreams and support timely resolution of design decisions and defects.
  • Coach MDM team members and business data stewards on SAP master data design, configuration impacts, governance controls, and support processes.
  • Provide functional leadership for acquisitions, divestitures, business integrations, continuous improvement initiatives, and future SAP deployments.
  • Monitor master data solution performance, recurring defects, data quality trends, and control effectiveness, and recommend sustainable improvements.
  • Lead root-cause analysis for configuration-related master data issues and implement corrective actions that prevent recurrence.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify and automate master data processes using SAP capabilities and approved supporting technologies.
  • Ensure incidents, requests, enhancements, and production changes follow established support, testing, documentation, and change-control processes.
  • Evaluate emerging SAP capabilities and recommend enhancements that improve scalability, user experience, data quality, and governance compliance.
  • Up to 25% travel may be required to support business process workshops, project deployments, integration activities, and SAP go-live events. Travel requirements may increase during critical implementation phases.

Job Requirements

  • 5+ years of SAP functional experience, including significant responsibility for master data processes, functional design, or configuration.
  • 5+ years of experience supporting one or more enterprise master data domains such as Material, Business Partner, Customer, Supplier/Vendor, or Finance master data.

  • Strong knowledge of enterprise MDM, data governance, data quality, data conversion, functional testing, and production support practices.
  • Experience creating functional specifications, configuration documentation, process flows, test scenarios, and requirements traceability.
  • Working knowledge of SAP Fiori and SAP data migration or integration concepts; experience with SAP Data Services or related technologies is preferred.
