Remote Computer Science Volunteer information

What is a remote computer science volunteer?

Remote computer science volunteers are individuals who offer their technical skills and knowledge in computer science to assist organizations, nonprofits, or educational programs from a distance, typically via the internet. They may contribute to projects such as coding, software development, website maintenance, technical support, or teaching programming skills. Volunteering remotely allows these individuals to support causes they care about without needing to be physically present, making it accessible for people from different locations. This role often requires strong communication, self-motivation, and a willingness to collaborate online.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote computer science volunteer?

To thrive as a Remote Computer Science Volunteer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages, algorithms, and software development principles, often supported by formal education or relevant coursework. Familiarity with collaboration tools like GitHub, project management platforms, and virtual meeting software is typically required. Strong communication, self-motivation, and teamwork skills help volunteers effectively contribute and coordinate with diverse, remote teams. These skills and qualities are important for delivering impactful technical solutions and maintaining productivity in a virtual environment.

Job description

Field Applications Scientist - Cell Health

Beckman Coulter Life Sciences' mission is to empower those seeking answers to life's most important scientific and healthcare questions. With a legacy spanning 80+ years, we have long been a trusted partner to our customers, who are working to transform science and healthcare with the next groundbreaking discovery. As part of our team of more than 2,900 associates across 130 countries, you'll help drive our vision of accelerating answers-and our commitment to excellence.

Beckman Coulter Life Sciences is one of 10 Life Sciences companies of Danaher. Together, we accelerate the discovery, development and delivery of solutions that safeguard and improve human health.

About this role

We are seeking a Field Applications Specialist to serve as the primary scientific and applications expert for our cell analysis and bioprocess analytics portfolio across the Eastern United States. This is a field-based, customer-facing role in which you will be the trusted scientific voice for customers in biopharma, cell line development, and process development-partnering closely with the Sales team while guiding customers to get the most reliable, reproducible results from their workflows.

At its core, this role is about scientific problem-solving. Every customer arrives with a different system-different cell types, different molecules, different objectives-and your job is to understand that system, identify the factors driving variability, and optimize a solution that works for them. Success depends as much on your ability to communicate complex science clearly, to audiences ranging from bench scientists to senior leadership, as on your technical depth. This is a remote role and can be performed from any location within the Eastern U.S. territory.

In this role, you will be responsible for:
  • Serving as the primary applications and scientific resource for customers - Solve challenges and get the most from their instruments and assays, understand the customer's specific cell types, samples, and goals; diagnosing the many sample- and instrument-level factors that can lead to variable or inconsistent results; and optimizing the workflow to deliver accurate, reproducible outcomes.
  • Supporting antibody and protein quantification applications by understanding customers' specific molecules-including antibody structure and conformation-and how those characteristics can influence results, then guiding customers toward reliable, optimized measurements.
  • Delivering product demonstrations, on-site trainings, and applications support, both in the field and via web-based platforms.
  • Working cross-functionally as the connective point between the customer and the wider organization: knowing who to engage and when, and collaborating across Sales, Product Management, and R&D to resolve issues and advance opportunities.
  • Capturing Voice of Customer from the field and relaying it to Product Management and R&D, helping to shape future product iterations and ensure the portfolio continues to perform and hold up over time.
The required qualifications for the job include:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, or a related life science; advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant life sciences experience in a field applications, technical support, or laboratory/bioprocess environment; a combination of hands-on lab experience with customer-facing experience is ideal.
  • Hands-on mammalian cell culture experience, preferably including fed-batch culture and the maintenance, counting, and viability assessment of mammalian cell lines (e.g., CHO, HEK).
  • Working knowledge of cell counting and viability analysis, including the sample- and instrument-level factors that can drive variability, and the ability to troubleshoot and optimize across diverse cell types.
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout the Eastern U.S. territory (up to 85%), with a valid driver's license and the ability to work independently from a home office.
It would be a plus if you also possess:
  • Cell line development (CLD) experience and hands-on familiarity with antibody / monoclonal (IgG) production - highly desired for supporting bioprocess and titer-related applications.
  • An understanding of antibody structure and conformation and how a molecule's characteristics can affect its quantification and behavior in an assay.
  • Process development or drug manufacturing experience in a biopharma/biotech setting (e.g., upstream/bioreactor, scale-up/scale-down, or GMP environments).
  • Hands-on experience with multimode microplate readers, particularly those with fluorescence polarization (FP) detection capability.
  • Understanding of B2B and QC/QA/R&D customer requirements and of validation processes in the pharma/biopharma industry (e.g., GMP, IQ, OQ).

Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements:

  • Ability to travel within a defined territory, with an expectation of ~3 days per week in the field engaging customers. This role requires frequent local travel to maximize account coverage and engagement; overnight travel is minimal.
  • Must have valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • The field sales activity will take this individual to customer's locations and moderate physical activity (e.g. lifting/carrying of materials) occurs
