What is a remote computer science research assistant?

A Remote Computer Science Research Assistant is someone who supports computer science research projects from a remote location, typically via the internet. Their duties often include conducting literature reviews, collecting and analyzing data, developing code or algorithms, and assisting with the preparation of academic papers or presentations. This role requires strong technical skills, good communication, and the ability to work independently while collaborating with a research team online. Remote assistants may work for universities, research institutes, or private companies on topics such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, or software engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote computer science research assistant?

To thrive as a Remote Computer Science Research Assistant, you need a solid background in computer science fundamentals, programming, and research methodology, often supported by progress toward or completion of a relevant degree. Familiarity with data analysis tools, programming languages like Python or Java, version control systems such as Git, and literature databases is typically required. Strong written communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you excel when collaborating remotely and handling independent research tasks. These abilities are crucial for efficiently contributing to research projects, meeting deadlines, and maintaining productive collaboration from a remote environment.

How do remote computer science research assistants typically collaborate with research teams when working from different locations?

Remote Computer Science Research Assistants generally use a mix of collaboration tools such as video conferencing, shared code repositories, and project management platforms to stay connected with their teams. Regular virtual meetings help align research goals, discuss progress, and resolve technical issues. Clear written communication is especially important in this setting, as documentation and asynchronous updates help ensure everyone is on the same page. Team members often share tasks such as data analysis, literature reviews, and experimental design, making collaboration a key part of daily responsibilities.

See our profile on Vault.com (which ranks us in their top Consulting 50 and #1 in Innovation), our website (decibio.com), and IG @ deci.bio.
The opportunity
Our consulting teams rely heavily on primary research, including interviews with scientists, clinicians, industry executives, commercial leaders, and other subject-matter experts. They also leverage our proprietary data sets, market reports, and expert network (run by Dexter, our SaaS subsidiary).
Thus, we are seeking a Research Specialist to help us consistently identify and engage the right experts for our primary research conversations. The Research Specialist will own much of the process for recruiting subject-matter experts for DeciBio's consulting engagements and proprietary research. Working across multiple projects at once, you will translate research needs into clear expert profiles, identify relevant candidates, conduct persistent and professional outreach, assess candidates' fit, and coordinate one-hour interviews between experts and our consulting teams:
  • Understanding each project's research objectives, expert criteria, timing, and priorities to develop and continuously refine specific target profiles and search strategies, while regularly seeking feedback from the project teams.
  • Searching and leveraging DeciBio's existing expert network, professional databases, company websites, publications, conference materials, LinkedIn, and other public sources to identify relevant candidates.
  • Conduct proactive outreach via email, phone, LinkedIn, or other appropriate channels -- while clearly and persuasively communicating the value proposition
  • Screening candidates for applicable experience, relevance, availability, communication skills, and suitability for a specific project.
  • Continuing to build and engage our network of contacts and support the development of Dexter's network. Developing positive, long-term relationships with experts who may be relevant for future engagements.
  • Successfully coordinating interviews ensuring successful completion and follow-through (incl. Payment), communicating all details and reminders across time zones, quickly and professionally resolving logistical conflicts, meeting tight project deadlines, and ultimately ensuring interview quotas are timely filled with applicable interviewees.
  • Supporting project administrative aspects, as needed.
  • Identifying sourcing pools, and proactively building expert benches in strategically important life-sciences markets. Develop reusable and automated search strategies, outreach templates, screening questions, and operating procedures.
  • Maintain quality, compliance, and accurate records. Capture and leverage feedback.
  • Track and improve accountability for core KPIs. Overall success will reflect volume, efficiency, and quality/relevance. E.g., interview completion counts and rates, conversion velocity, quality and satisfaction, outreach responsiveness and conversion rates, accuracy, compliance, network growth and quality, etc.

This unique role provides an opportunity to engage with and support stakeholders across DeciBio's departments.
The role combines research, recruiting, relationship-building, project coordination, and elements of sales. It is not a consulting analyst position, although it provides significant exposure to life-sciences markets, strategic questions, and senior industry professionals.
Over time, the role may expand into broader Knowledge Center responsibilities, including: training and/or managing future research specialists, more complex important sourcing engagements, expert-network development initiatives, supporting DeciBio's internal and proprietary Intelligence Portal, AI-enabled research, special research projects, business-development support, knowledge management, and eventually the management of additional research-support resources. The right employee could also grow to help identify and coordinate qualified business development conversations.
Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the jurisdiction(s) hired for, for the entire duration of their employment.
  • Success in this role requires operational efficiency and rigor, interpersonal finesse, written communication skills, superior organization while managing multiple workstreams and many moving pieces, exceptional attention to detail, an ability to quickly learn unfamiliar topics, intellectual curiosity, unrelenting professionalism, social confidence (including while conducting cold outreach with senior professionals by phone and email), resilience and persistence, adaptability, an ability to work independently while communicating proactively, high responsiveness in a fast-paced work environment, exemplary ambassadorship of the DeciBio brand, a positive and service-oriented attitude with a strong sense of ownership, good judgment, and a drive to exceed measurable goals on a regular basis.
  • Preferred but not required:
    • Academic background or demonstrated interest in biology, healthcare, life sciences, or a related field.
    • Internship or early experience in recruiting, sales development, market research, consulting, customer success, or an expert-network business.
    • Familiarity with life-sciences companies, clinical markets, research tools, diagnostics, or biopharma.
    • Experience conducting online research or using professional networking and CRM platforms.
    • Experience in a role involving high-volume outreach, scheduling, or external relationship management.

Compensation
In addition to base salary, DeciBio offers performance-based incentives, year-end company-wide profit sharing, and comprehensive employee benefits.
The incentive component may reflect successful completion of qualified expert interviews, sourcing quality, responsiveness, accuracy, and broader team contribution. Specific compensation will depend on location and experience.
