Remote Computer Aided Drug Design focuses on using computational tools to identify and optimize drug candidates, often working remotely with data and modeling software. In contrast, Remote Medicinal Chemists combine computational work with laboratory synthesis and testing, typically requiring lab access. Both roles are vital in drug development but differ in their hands-on versus software-based approaches.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote computer aided drug design professional?

To thrive as a Remote Computer Aided Drug Design professional, you need a strong background in computational chemistry, molecular modeling, and drug discovery, typically supported by a degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field. Proficiency in software tools such as Schrodinger, MOE, AutoDock, and knowledge of programming languages like Python are commonly required. Strong problem-solving ability, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset are vital soft skills for remote teamwork and project advancement. These technical and interpersonal skills are essential for accelerating drug discovery while ensuring seamless collaboration in a virtual environment.

What is a remote computer aided drug design?

A Remote Computer Aided Drug Design (CADD) job involves using computational tools and software to design, analyze, and optimize potential drug molecules from a remote location. Professionals in this role apply principles of chemistry, biology, and computer science to model molecular interactions and predict the efficacy of new compounds. This work is often part of early-stage drug discovery in pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies and allows scientists to collaborate virtually with teams around the world. Remote CADD jobs require strong technical skills in molecular modeling, structural biology, and data analysis, as well as effective communication for virtual teamwork.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote computer aided drug design roles, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in remote Computer Aided Drug Design (CADD) roles is effective communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, as projects often require input from chemists, biologists, and data scientists. To address this, professionals should leverage collaborative software platforms and schedule regular virtual meetings to ensure alignment and rapid feedback. Additionally, managing secure access to sensitive data and high-performance computing resources can require proactive coordination with IT departments. Staying organized and maintaining detailed documentation are also crucial to keep projects on track while working remotely.

Job Type
Contract
Description
This is a contractor position only and must have your own software and PC!
This position focuses on Mechanical CAD data management, library architecture, and SolidWorks PDM implementation. It is not a mechanical product design role.
Seeking an experienced Mechanical CAD Data Management Consultant to establish a scalable mechanical CAD library and data-management infrastructure in preparation for a SolidWorks PDM migration.
This is not a mechanical product design position. We are looking for someone with hands-on experience organizing, restructuring, and administering mechanical CAD data, assemblies, libraries, and PDM environments.
The ideal candidate has successfully developed CAD standards, part classification systems, and migration strategies that improve long-term maintainability and engineering efficiency.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Assess existing mechanical CAD files, assemblies, and library structure.
  • Review current part classifications, assembly hierarchy, and design workflows.
  • Develop logical part-numbering and classification standards for:
    • Components
    • Assemblies
    • Subassemblies
    • CAD reference objects
  • Define best practices for organizing mechanical CAD data.
  • Map legacy CAD data into the new organizational structure.
  • Assist with planning and executing migration into SolidWorks PDM.
  • Resolve legacy assembly reference and broken-link issues.
  • Recommend processes for long-term CAD library governance and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with engineering and ERP stakeholders to improve data consistency.
Ideal Candidate
We're seeking a consultant who has built and organized engineering CAD infrastructure, not simply created mechanical designs. This individual understands how to structure engineering data so it remains scalable, searchable, maintainable, and ready for future product development.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • 7+ years of SolidWorks mechanical CAD experience.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing or administering SolidWorks PDM.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical CAD data organization and library management.
  • Experience developing CAD standards, naming conventions, and part-numbering systems.
  • Experience restructuring large mechanical CAD libraries.
  • Ability to troubleshoot broken file references and assembly relationships.
  • Familiarity with engineering document control and configuration management.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience integrating CAD data with ERP or PLM systems.
  • Experience leading CAD migration or data-cleanup initiatives.
  • Background supporting electronics or embedded hardware development environments.
  • Experience developing engineering documentation standards and workflows.
