Remote Collection Development Librarian information

What are Remote Collection Development Librarians?

Remote Collection Development Librarians are professionals who manage and curate library collections while working from a remote location, often outside of the physical library. Their primary responsibilities include selecting and acquiring new materials (such as books, digital resources, and media), evaluating the existing collection, and ensuring that the library’s holdings meet the needs of its users. They collaborate with other librarians and stakeholders using digital tools and communication platforms. This role often requires strong research skills, knowledge of library management systems, and an understanding of the needs of the library’s community.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Collection Development Librarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Collection Development Librarian, you need expertise in information science, collection assessment, and materials selection, typically supported by a Master of Library Science (MLS/MLIS) degree. Familiarity with integrated library systems (ILS), digital content management platforms, and data analysis tools is commonly required. Strong communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills help you effectively negotiate with vendors and align collections with user needs. These skills ensure that library resources remain relevant, accessible, and responsive to the evolving demands of the community.

How does a Remote Collection Development Librarian effectively collaborate with on-site staff to curate and manage library resources?

As a Remote Collection Development Librarian, you will frequently coordinate with on-site librarians, subject specialists, and technical services teams through virtual meetings, email, and collaborative platforms. Clear communication and regular check-ins are essential for staying aligned on collection priorities, acquisition processes, and resource evaluations. While you may work independently, successful remote librarians proactively seek input from colleagues and maintain strong digital documentation to ensure transparency. Building strong virtual relationships helps streamline decision-making and fosters a cohesive approach to developing and maintaining a well-rounded collection.

Job description

Director, Product Management

This is a remote position. We are looking for candidates in the US.

The Opportunity:

As a Director on the Grafana Labs Product Management team, you'll develop vision and strategy for a broad product domain, align multiple teams around clear priorities, and ensure product decisions support customer outcomes and Grafana Labs' business objectives. You'll own the roadmap, deeply understand customers and the market, and communicate product direction, tradeoffs, and outcomes clearly to customers, senior leadership, and cross-functional partners.

Product Managers work closely with Engineering, Design, Technical Writing, Developer Advocacy, Analytics, Product Marketing, and GTM to build and ship products that meet the needs of our very technical customer base. This includes shaping the product story and positioning, supporting launch and field enablement, and helping define pricing and packaging models that reflect the value customers receive while enabling Grafana Labs to capture that value in a way customers can understand and accept.

Grafana Labs is building for an AI-first world, and Product Management is accountable for helping define what that means for our products, customers, and the observability industry at-large. We expect PM leaders to actively build fluency with AI tools and workflows, identify where AI can create meaningful customer value, and think strategically about how our products should evolve as users increasingly work with and through AI systems.

What You'll Be Doing:

As the Director of Product for Data Collection, Transformation, and Ingestion, you will lead the product strategy for the systems and experiences that help customers generate, collect, transform, and ingest telemetry data into Grafana Cloud, then make that data available for fast, reliable, cost-effective querying.

This product domain spans the full telemetry journey: from telemetry generation and instrumentation, through collection, transformation, ingestion, and querying. This includes OpenTelemetry SDKs and instrumentation libraries, Grafana Beyla, the OpenTelemetry Collector, and Grafana Alloy. It also includes Adaptive Telemetry, a Grafana Cloud capability that helps customers control telemetry volume and cost while preserving the data that matters, and Grafana Labs' world-class telemetry databases - Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope - all of which support massively high-scale ingestion and querying.

This role will shape one of the most foundational parts of Grafana Cloud: how customers send us data, how we help make that data usable, and how we turn this foundation into a differentiated product experience. You will guide strategy across multiple engineering teams and product areas, helping Grafana Labs build a cohesive, opinionated, and scalable data path for metrics, logs, traces, profiles, and other telemetry signals.

You will ensure this data path supports Grafana Labs' full-stack observability strategy, including our opinionated, integrated solutions such as Frontend Observability, Application Observability, and Kubernetes Observability, while also serving customers who use Grafana Cloud's hosted metrics, logs, traces, and profiles offerings to create observability experiences tailored to their own business and technical needs.

You will also help define how this domain evolves in an AI-first world. That means thinking beyond how humans configure collectors, pipelines, transformations, and ingestion workflows today, and considering how AI can help customers generate better instrumentation, optimize telemetry volume and quality, troubleshoot collection issues, query more efficiently, and interact with Grafana Cloud through both user-facing and agent-facing experiences.

You will manage a team of Product Managers and be accountable for helping them set clear strategy, make strong prioritization decisions, work effectively with their cross-functional partners, and grow in their careers. You should be equally comfortable coaching a PM through a tricky tradeoff, aligning with Engineering Directors on a multi-quarter roadmap, presenting strategy to senior leadership, and explaining Grafana Labs' approach to telemetry collection, transformation, and ingestion to customers.

As Director of Product Management at Grafana Labs, you will:

  • Develop and own the product vision and strategy for Data Collection, Transformation, and Ingestion as a core platform capability for Grafana Cloud
  • Partner closely with senior R&D leaders to align product and technical strategy across teams, make clear tradeoffs, and ensure the roadmap balances customer value, platform leverage, operational excellence, and business impact
  • Use customer research, product analytics, competitive insight, and business context to identify the highest-impact problems to solve
  • Define how AI should influence this domain, including how it can help customers instrument applications, configure collection, transform telemetry, control cost, improve data quality, query more efficiently, and troubleshoot ingestion issues more intelligently
  • Build strong relationships with customers and prospects, especially technical buyers and observability practitioners
  • Help GTM teams understand product differentiation, customer value, roadmap direction, AI relevance, and market positioning
  • Coach and develop Product Managers, helping them strengthen their product judgment, strategic thinking, communication, stakeholder management, and ability to drive high-quality outcomes with their cross-functional teams
  • Create a high-accountability, high-trust environment where PMs and cross-functional teams understand what matters, why it matters, and how their work contributes to Grafana Labs' success

What Makes You a Great Fit:

  • Significant Product Management experience, including leading product strategy across multiple teams, product areas, or complex technical workflows
  • Experience directly managing Product Managers, including coaching, feedback, performance management, hiring, and career development
  • Strong technical fluency in infrastructure, cloud platforms, observability, telemetry, data pipelines, high scale databases, or other developer/infrastructure product domains
  • Strong product instincts around AI, including the ability to identify where AI can create meaningful customer value in technical products used by developers, operators, SREs, platform teams, or infrastructure teams
  • Strong customer empathy and strategic judgment, with the ability to translate complex customer problems into clear product strategy, roadmap priorities, and tradeoffs
  • Strong cross-functional leadership and communication skills, with experience influencing Engineering, Design, Technical Writing, Developer Advocacy, Analytics, Product Marketing, GTM, and executive stakeholders
  • The ability to create clarity in ambiguity, help teams make progress without over-prescribing solutions, and operate effectively in a globally distributed, remote-first environment
  • A BS/BA in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience

Bonus Points For:

  • Experience with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana Alloy, Grafana Mimir, Grafana Loki, Grafana Tempo, and/or Grafana Pyroscope
  • Experience with ETL, telemetry pipelines, large-scale data processing, or data transformation workflows, including sampling, filtering, enrichment, routing, or cost/performance optimization
  • Experience with high-scale databases, distributed systems, or big data platforms
  • Experience building AI-enabled product experiences for technical users, including developers, SREs, platform engineers, or infrastructure teams
  • Experience with agent-facing product design, AI-assisted workflows, or how products should evolve when users increasingly delegate tasks to AI systems
  • Experience working at an open source or commercial open source company
  • Experience partnering with GTM teams on positioning, packaging, pricing, launch strategy, or field enablement for technical products
  • Experience leading product strategy for platform capabilities that serve multiple product lines or customer segments
