Is there a demand for remote COBOL developers?

Remote COBOL developers are in demand due to ongoing reliance on legacy systems in industries like finance and government. Many organizations seek experienced developers with skills in mainframe environments, often requiring knowledge of tools like IBM z/OS and COBOL programming. The demand remains steady as these systems continue to operate critical functions worldwide.

What is a remote Cobol developer?

A Remote Cobol Developer is a software programmer who specializes in COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language) and works from a location outside of a traditional office setting, often from home. COBOL is a legacy programming language commonly used in business, finance, and administrative systems for companies and governments. Remote Cobol Developers maintain, update, and troubleshoot COBOL-based applications, frequently collaborating with teams online. Their work often involves supporting or modernizing critical systems that have been in operation for decades. This role requires strong problem-solving skills and familiarity with mainframe environments.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Cobol developers when working with legacy systems?

Remote COBOL developers often encounter challenges such as limited or outdated documentation, complex legacy codebases, and integration with newer technologies. Effective communication with on-site teams is essential to clarify requirements and resolve issues, especially when institutional knowledge is not well-documented. Additionally, accessing mainframe environments securely from remote locations may require specialized tools and coordination with IT departments. Overcoming these challenges usually involves proactive collaboration, utilizing version control systems, and staying current with both COBOL and relevant modernization tools.

Job description

Description

Sharetec is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our team!

At Sharetec, we believe in a people-first business. Our mission is to make millions of people's lives easier by developing innovative core banking and lending software solutions for credit unions and their members. Our customers rely on us for powerful financial technology that enhances operations across accounting, lending, member services, and online banking - and they count on us to be a caring, trusted partner in their success.

The Role

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Digital team as a core full stack builder and technical owner. You'll work alongside a close-knit team of engineers to design, build, and maintain the products and platform that power Sharetec's Digital Banking experience - serving hundreds of credit union customers and their members.

This is a high-impact role on a focused team with a big roadmap. You'll contribute directly to significant product modernization initiatives, deliver features across our Digital Banking applications, and play a key role in architecting a new API layer that will expand the capabilities of Sharetec's Digital Banking platform.

If you thrive in a remote, collaborative environment where you own your work end-to-end, enjoy working across the full stack, and are energized by modernizing systems while shipping real product value, this role was built for you.

Position Details

This is a full-time, exempt, remote position open to candidates residing in any U.S. state, with the exception of California. The starting salary for this position is $120,000 - $140,000 based on experience, plus bonus eligibility.

Who Will Love This Job

  • Someone who is a true full stack engineer - equally comfortable in a Node.js or Go service and a React + TypeScript component
  • Someone who thrives on owning their work from database design to deployed UI, not just executing assigned tasks
  • Someone who finds genuine satisfaction in modernizing legacy systems - treating a rewrite as an opportunity, not a chore
  • Someone who values tight-knit team dynamics, gives and receives direct feedback, and communicates early when something is off
  • Someone who is excited about the challenge of architecting a new API layer that meaningfully expands the capabilities of Sharetec's Digital Banking platform
  • Someone who cares about quality - not perfection for its own sake, but building software that credit union members can depend on

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & System Design

  • Partner with the Digital engineering team and leadership to design scalable, maintainable full stack systems that align with Sharetec's Digital roadmap
  • Drive technical design discussions across active modernization initiatives and the new Digital API integration layer
  • Evaluate and recommend tooling, patterns, and architectural decisions across the frontend (React, TypeScript, Next.js) and backend (C#, ASP.NET Core) stack
  • Advocate for secure-by-default design - ensuring code is reviewed, scanned, and tested before it reaches production
  • Contribute to API design standards and integration patterns that expand the reach and capabilities of Sharetec's Digital Banking platform

Software Development & Delivery

  • Build, test, and maintain production-quality features across Sharetec's Digital Banking web and mobile platform - including iOS and Android applications built with React Native
  • Write clean, well-documented, and well-tested code across the stack - TypeScript and React on the frontend, C# and ASP.NET Core on the backend - that meets Sharetec's engineering standards
  • Manage work across the full lifecycle - from design and implementation through code review, testing, and production monitoring
  • Work within containerized environments using Docker and contribute to CI/CD pipeline health and reliability
  • Work with relational and cloud databases including PostgreSQL and MySQL, with an understanding of when and how to apply the right data store for the job
  • Deliver sprint commitments reliably, surface scope risk early, and maintain a consistent, predictable delivery cadence

Collaboration, Mentorship & Continuous Improvement

  • Partner closely with your Digital engineering teammates as a collaborative peer - sharing context, participating in design reviews, and proactively helping the team succeed
  • Lead and contribute to code reviews that improve the quality of the codebase and help teammates grow
  • Share knowledge of the Digital stack through documentation, pairing sessions, and team discussions
  • Support the onboarding of future Digital team members as the team scales
  • Participate actively in Agile ceremonies - planning, standups, retros - and contribute to continuous process improvement
  • Invest in your own growth: stay current on the tools and patterns most relevant to the Digital stack and Sharetec's roadmap

Qualified Candidates Should Have

Required

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated full stack ownership
  • Strong proficiency in React and TypeScript - building and maintaining production-quality frontend applications
  • Experience with Next.js or a comparable server-side rendering framework
  • Experience shipping production mobile applications to the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android) - our mobile apps are built with React Native; candidates with native Swift or Kotlin experience are encouraged to apply as that experience transfers well
  • Solid backend development experience - our stack is C# / ASP.NET Core, and candidates with backgrounds in Node.js, Go, PHP, or other strongly-typed backend languages are encouraged to apply; comfort learning and working in C# is expected
  • Solid API design and integration experience - RESTful APIs with an understanding of versioning, authentication, and external service integrations
  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL in a production context - candidates with backgrounds in Redis, MongoDB, or other data stores are welcome and will find that experience translates well
  • Experience with Docker and containerized development or deployment environments
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to or leading the modernization of an existing production system (not just greenfield)
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a remote-first, async environment
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience

Preferred

  • Direct experience with C# and ASP.NET Core
  • Experience with native iOS (Swift) or Android (Kotlin) development
  • Familiarity with Tailwind CSS, ShadCN, or modern component libraries such as Radix UI or MUI
  • Background in financial services, fintech, or banking software (credit union experience a significant plus)
  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks relevant to financial software (SOC 2, PCI-DSS, etc.)
  • Experience designing APIs intended for multi-tenant or platform-scale architectures
  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum workflows and experience in a distributed, remote engineering team

What Success Looks Like

In Your First 30 Days

  • Complete onboarding and gain a solid working understanding of Sharetec's Digital codebase, architecture, and team conventions
  • Ship your first contribution to the Digital Banking platform - small, scoped, and code-reviewed
  • Establish strong working relationships across the Digital engineering team and broader Sharetec engineering organization
  • Participate in sprint planning and architecture discussions to begin building context on the Digital roadmap

By 60 Days

  • Own and deliver a meaningful feature end-to-end - backend API through frontend component - within one of the active Digital platform initiatives
  • Develop a point of view on the Digital stack and architecture - be able to speak to trade-offs and recommend improvements
  • Establish a regular cadence of code reviews and peer collaboration with the Digital engineering team

By 90 Days and Beyond

  • Serve as a reliable technical owner for one or more modules or feature areas within the Digital platform
  • Drive or co-lead a meaningful architecture decision within a core Digital initiative
  • Actively mentor and elevate teammates - through review quality, pairing, and knowledge sharing
  • Contribute to the Digital team's delivery velocity and predictability, reducing blockers and increasing sprint confidence
