Remote Cloud Infrastructure Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote cloud infrastructure engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Cloud Infrastructure Engineer, you need expertise in cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), networking, and infrastructure automation, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like Terraform, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and relevant cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect) is essential. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively across distributed teams and resolve complex technical issues. These skills and qualifications are crucial for building secure, scalable, and reliable cloud solutions while working independently in a remote environment.

What does a remote cloud infrastructure engineer do?

A Remote Cloud Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining an organization’s cloud-based systems and services, all while working remotely. They ensure that cloud environments are scalable, secure, and highly available, supporting business operations and development teams. Their duties often include configuring cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, automating infrastructure with tools such as Terraform or Ansible, monitoring system performance, and troubleshooting issues. Remote work enables them to collaborate with teams across different locations using communication and project management tools.

What is the difference between Remote Cloud Infrastructure Engineer vs Cloud Systems Administrator?

AspectRemote Cloud Infrastructure EngineerCloud Systems Administrator
CredentialsCertifications like AWS, Azure, GCP; Linux, networkingSimilar certifications; Linux, networking, cloud certifications
Work EnvironmentRemote or hybrid; cloud-focused infrastructure projectsRemote or on-site; managing cloud and on-premise systems
Industry UsageTech, finance, healthcare, any cloud-dependent sectorIT, tech, enterprise sectors with cloud infrastructure
Job FocusDesign, deploy, optimize cloud infrastructureMaintain, troubleshoot, and support cloud systems

The Remote Cloud Infrastructure Engineer and Cloud Systems Administrator roles share many certifications and work environments, often overlapping in cloud-focused industries. The main difference lies in their focus: engineers design and deploy cloud infrastructure, while administrators maintain and troubleshoot existing systems.

How does a remote cloud infrastructure engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams while working remotely?

Remote Cloud Infrastructure Engineers frequently collaborate with development, security, and operations teams through virtual communication platforms and project management tools. Regular video meetings, shared documentation, and real-time chat channels help ensure alignment on infrastructure deployments, troubleshooting, and system optimizations. Clear communication, proactive status updates, and a strong understanding of team workflows are crucial for success in this remote, collaborative environment. Adapting to asynchronous communication and leveraging cloud-based collaboration tools are also key aspects of working effectively in this role.

Job description

In this position...

Ford Motor Company is accelerating its connected vehicle ecosystem and we are seeking a Director, Cloud Platform Transformation - Devices & Data Infrastructure to lead the initiative of one of the most strategic technology shifts in our global portfolio. This role will serve as the transformation leader responsible for guiding the migration of highly critical connected vehicle cloud services from AWS to Google Cloud Platform (GCP), while shaping the future of Ford's Device Connectivity Platform and Data Infrastructure.

This is a hands-on, individual contributor, influential leadership role designed for a technical executive who thrives in ambiguity, excels at cross-functional orchestration, and can drive clarity and momentum across complex environments. During the migration period, you may lead small, high-impact engineering team members and partner deeply across product, platform, and operations groups to implement various transformation strategies.

You'll have...

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field - or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in cloud engineering, platform engineering, or related technical leadership roles.
  • Hands-on experience designing, deploying, and supporting cloud-based solutions (AWS, GCP, or similar).
  • Experience with modern engineering technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud-native architectures.
  • Understanding of APIs, systems integration patterns, performance modeling, and cloud security principles.
  • Experience supporting "always-on" production systems at scale.
  • Prior involvement in large-scale cloud migrations or platform transformations.

Even better, you may have...

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with connected vehicle platforms, IoT systems, or large-scale distributed systems.
  • Leadership experience across global teams and multi-disciplinary engineering organizations.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and tools (e.g., Jira).
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to influence product and operational priorities.
  • Proven ability to drive process discipline and continuous improvement in complex environments.

Why This Role Matters...

This position sits at the center of Ford's connected vehicle strategy. The work you lead will directly impact millions of customers, billions of daily transactions, and the future of Ford's cloud platform ecosystem. You will shape the next generation of connected mobility - and then bring that transformation mindset to the next major challenge inside the company.

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!

As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home? Will your career be a deep dive into what you love, or a series of new teams and new skills? Will you be a leader, a changemaker, a technical expert, a culture builder...or all of the above? No matter what you choose, we offer a work life that works for you, including:
Immediate medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage
Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new parent ramp-up programs, subsidized back-up childcare and more
Family building benefits including adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement, fertility treatments, and more
Vehicle discount program for employees and family members and management leases
Tuition assistance
Established and active employee resource groups
Paid time off for individual and team community service
A generous schedule of paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year's Day
Paid time off and the option to purchase additional vacation time.

This position is a leadership level 4.

Final determination of salary grade will be based on candidate's skills and experience, and base salary will be set within the applicable range according to job scope, responsibility and competitive market value.
