Position:Senior Manager - Software Engineering and AIPosition Summary:We're seeking a Senior Manager to lead a key software and AI engineering team building the AI capabilities behind Tom, our AI-enabled primary care platform. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, you'll combine hands-on technical leadership - reviewing code, writing and iterating on prompts, and guiding architecture decisions - with day-to-day leadership of a growing team of software and prompt engineers. This role is ideal for someone who has personally built and deployed production AI systems and is ready to bring that experience to leading others.Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Lead a team of software engineers, principal engineers, and prompt engineersbuildingthe conversational AI systems behind Tom.
  • Own day-to-day technical decisions for the team; partner with architecture on larger solution design.
  • Conduct code reviews and set the standard for engineering and architectural best practices across the team.
  • Coach team members on execution standards, technical growth, and career development.

Hands-On AI & Prompt Development

  • Write, test, and iterate on production-grade prompts powering conversational AI agents.
  • Stay directly engaged in the technical work rather than directing exclusively from a distance.
  • Build process and structure around the promptdevelopmentlifecycle, includingrequirementstraceability and unit testing discipline.

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Partner closely with Product Management to translate ambiguous, fast-moving requirements into organized, testable delivery.
  • Ensure the teamstaysfocused on the right priorities as they evolve.
  • Represent the team in informal and occasional formal settings with company leadership.

People Leadership

  • Manage, coach, and develop a growing team, with technical leadership extending to broader areas of engineering.
  • Support performance management, career growth, and day-to-day guidance for team members.
  • Develops and administers schedules and performance requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent.
  • 8+years of overall software engineering experience, including2+ years leading a technical team.
  • Must-havehands-on experience building and deploying production-grade AI systems, including direct, personal experience writing anditerating onprompts running in live production environments, not solely internal or experimental use.
  • Conversational AI experiencestronglypreferred, including AI agents, assistants, or chatbot systems that interact directly with end users.
  • Healthcare industry experience or Google Cloud Platform (GCP) experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated comfortoperatingin ambiguous, 0-to-1 environments, building new systems rather than primarilymaintainingestablished ones.
  • Advanced knowledge of professional software engineering practices across the full development lifecycle, including coding standards, code review, source control, testing, and Agile delivery.
  • Strong Object-Oriented Programming fundamentals, with experience in modern web/service architectures (REST APIs, MVC frameworks).
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders and assert a point of view when needed.
