JOB DESCRIPTION: SAWPERSON (UTILITY VEGETATION MANAGEMENT)

The Sawperson is a field-based role responsible for supporting utility vegetation management operations through the safe and effective cutting, clearing, and processing of vegetation. This position focuses on brush clearing, tree cutting, and right-of-way (ROW) work in support of transmission line, distribution line, and wildfire mitigation projects.

This role is more advanced than a Groundsperson and requires demonstrated proficiency with chainsaw operation in utility or vegetation management environments. Sawpersons work closely with forepersons, equipment operators, climbers, and ground crews to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all project specifications and safety standards.

Regular travel is required for this role, with assignments involving 80–90% travel to project sites. Per Diem is offered at $100 per workday.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operate chainsaws and hand tools to cut, fell, limb, buck, and clear vegetation in utility and right-of-way environments.
  • Perform brush clearing and vegetation removal to maintain required clearance distances around transmission and distribution lines.
  • Assist climbers, bucket operators, and mechanized equipment operators with ground support activities.
  • Manage work zones, process debris, and maintain clean and safe job sites.
  • Conduct routine inspections and basic maintenance of chainsaws, tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Follow all ArborWorks safety policies, job briefings, and site-specific hazard mitigation procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with crew members and forepersons to coordinate daily work activities.
  • Represent ArborWorks professionally when interacting with landowners, customers, and the public.
  • Participate in required training programs and track skill development as assigned.



QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Experience:
  • Prior experience in utility vegetation management, brush clearing, tree work, or related outdoor field work preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience operating chainsaws in professional or field-based environments required.

Training & Certifications:
  • Completed and signed Groundsperson or Sawperson training (or ability to complete upon hire).
  • CPR and First Aid certification (required within 90 days of hire).
  • Participation in LCCP/LCQP programs preferred (or ability to obtain).
  • Completion of all ArborWorks-required safety and operational training.

Licenses:
  • Valid driver’s license preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
  • Familiarity with utility right-of-way work, transmission or distribution line clearance.
  • Ability to identify common vegetation hazards and apply safe cutting techniques.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and continuous learning.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, terrain, and remote locations.
  • Work performed near energized electrical facilities, requiring strict compliance with safety standards.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks, including repetitive movements and prolonged standing or walking.
  • Travel to job sites required 80–90% of the time, including travel to remote areas as needed.
