What is a remote CFO in government?

A Remote CFO (Chief Financial Officer) in government is a financial executive who oversees the financial operations, planning, and reporting for a government agency or department, but works remotely rather than on-site. Their responsibilities include budgeting, compliance, financial analysis, and ensuring the financial integrity of public funds. Remote CFOs use digital tools to collaborate with teams, manage financial data, and ensure that the organization meets regulatory and policy requirements. This role is critical for maintaining transparency and accountability in government financial management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote CFO in government?

To thrive as a Remote CFO in government, you need deep expertise in public sector accounting, financial management, and compliance, typically supported by a CPA or similar credential and substantial experience in governmental finance. Familiarity with government accounting software, ERP systems, and advanced financial analysis tools is essential. Strong leadership, communication, and strategic decision-making skills help you effectively collaborate with stakeholders and guide fiscal policy remotely. These competencies are crucial for ensuring transparency, regulatory compliance, and sound financial stewardship in a government setting.

What are some common challenges faced by a remote CFO working with government organizations?

Remote CFOs in government settings often navigate complex regulatory requirements and strict compliance standards. Communication can be challenging when collaborating virtually with multiple departments and stakeholders, making it essential to establish clear processes and regular check-ins. Additionally, adapting to various government-specific financial systems and ensuring transparency across distributed teams requires strong organizational and leadership skills. Successfully addressing these challenges can lead to improved efficiency and recognition within the public sector.

Job description

Our Deloitte Finance Transformation team practices to help chief financial officers, controllers, and finance teams define and execute their finance and global business services agendas and strategies. You will work with leading-class teams and solutions, helping clients navigate challenging environments, market uncertainty, technology development, and regulatory considerations to unlock value. Your work may span strategy, operations, process design, and technology as we partner with clients to transform finance.

Work You'll Do

  • Configure and develop within OneStream to support finance processes (planning, budgeting, forecasting, close & consolidation, and reporting), aligned to established solution designs.
  • Build and maintain business rules (calculations, validations, allocations, and transformations) using OneStream development tools and best practices.
  • Support data management activities including data loads, mappings, transformations, reconciliations, and error handling within OneStream (and/or comparable CPM platforms such as Hyperion or SAP BPC).
  • Develop scripts and queries using VB.NET and/or SQL to enable automation, support integrations, and troubleshoot data/process issues.
  • Execute testing activities (unit testing, system testing support, defect fixes, and regression testing) and document results to ensure stable releases.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve development defects across business rules, workflows, data loads, and reports, escalating patterns and proposing preventative fixes.
  • Produce technical documentation (configuration notes, rule logic descriptions, deployment steps, and runbooks) to support repeatable delivery and operations.

The Team

Deloitte's Government & Public Services (GPS) practice - our people, ideas, technology and outcomes - is designed for impact. Serving federal, state, & local government clients as well as public higher education institutions, our team of professionals brings fresh perspective to help clients anticipate disruption, reimagine the possible, and fulfill their mission promise.

Our Business Finance offering enables finance to drive strategic value through transformation and synchronization of planning, costing, budgeting and forecasting across finance and other functions. Using advanced, scalable data and tech platforms, we also generate actionable insights and analytics, streamline decision making and enable data driven profitable growth. Manages risk and opportunities associated with diverse and complex grant programs through end-to-end grants management solutions.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years scripting experience with VB.NET or SQL
  • Ability to travel 0-25%, on average, based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve.

For individuals assigned and/or hired to work in a Remote role, Deloitte is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This compensation range is specific to Remote role and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. At Deloitte, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $82,600 to $162,800.

You may also be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program, subject to the rules governing the program, whereby an award, if any, depends on various factors, including, without limitation, individual and organizational performance.
