What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Cattle Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Cattle Manager, you need expertise in animal husbandry, livestock health management, and pasture management, often supported by an agricultural degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with remote monitoring technologies, data analysis platforms, and livestock management software is typically required. Strong problem-solving, self-motivation, and communication skills help manage herds effectively from a distance and coordinate with on-site staff. These skills ensure optimal cattle health, operational efficiency, and successful remote management.

What are some unique challenges faced by remote cattle managers compared to on-site roles?

Remote cattle managers often face challenges in monitoring herd health and welfare without being physically present, relying heavily on technology such as surveillance cameras, sensors, and data analytics. Effective communication and coordination with on-site staff, veterinarians, and suppliers become essential to ensure timely responses to any issues. Additionally, remote roles require a high level of self-discipline and strong organizational skills to manage operations, maintain accurate records, and oversee multiple tasks from a distance. Staying updated on the latest livestock management technologies and best practices is also crucial for success in this role.

What are remote cattle?

Remote cattle refers to livestock, specifically cattle, that are managed, monitored, or cared for from a distance using technology. This can include the use of GPS tracking, remote cameras, automated feeders, and health monitoring systems to oversee cattle herds without the need for constant physical presence. Remote cattle management allows ranchers and farmers to efficiently track the location, health, and well-being of their herds, often in large or hard-to-access areas. This approach helps save time, reduce labor costs, and improve animal welfare by enabling quicker responses to issues.

Job description

Part time in the Southeast (GA, AL, MS)

Who We Are

American Farmland Trust is the only national organization that takes a holistic approach to agriculture, focusing on the land itself, the agricultural practices used on that land, and the farmers and ranchers who do the work. Since our founding in 1980, AFT has helped permanently protect over 6.5 million acres of agricultural lands, advanced environmentally-sound farming practices on millions of additional acres and helped thousands of farm families make a go of it (primarily through programs that increase farm viability and/or enhance farmland access). Long a pioneering leader, AFT is now riding a new wave of growth, driven by agricultureโ€™s most pressing needs and opportunities.

We believe diversity drives innovation. We are inclusive. We embrace differences. We recognize and respect the fundamental value and dignity of all our employees. We celebrate the unique traditions, heritages, and experiences our employees bring to the workplace. We are committed to creating and sustaining an inclusive culture that promotes and values diversity, and where everyone feels empowered to bring their authentic selves to work every day.
