Remote Cataloger information

What is a remote cataloger?

A Remote Cataloger is responsible for organizing, classifying, and maintaining records or metadata for libraries, museums, archives, or online databases. This role typically involves using cataloging standards like MARC, AACR2, RDA, or Dublin Core to ensure accurate and consistent record-keeping. Remote Catalogers often work from home, utilizing digital tools and library management systems to access and update records. They may catalog books, manuscripts, digital media, or other collections, depending on the organization’s needs. Strong attention to detail and familiarity with classification systems like Dewey Decimal or Library of Congress are essential for success in this role.

What are common daily tasks for a remote cataloger, and how is performance typically measured?

As a Remote Cataloger, your daily tasks usually include reviewing physical or digital materials, assigning accurate metadata and classification codes, updating library or institutional catalogs, and verifying data consistency. You may also participate in team meetings virtually, resolve cataloging discrepancies, and collaborate with librarians or archivists to improve collection access. Performance is often measured by productivity (number of records processed), accuracy of cataloging according to established standards, and the ability to meet project deadlines. Demonstrating flexibility and strong communication skills is important as you may coordinate with team members in different locations and time zones.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote cataloger?

To thrive as a Remote Cataloger, you need expertise in metadata standards, attention to detail, and experience with bibliographic databases, often supported by a degree in library or information science. Familiarity with cataloging software such as OCLC Connexion, Integrated Library Systems (ILS), and knowledge of classification systems like MARC21 or RDA are typically required. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and strong written communication skills help remote catalogers excel in a virtual team environment. These abilities are crucial for ensuring the accurate organization, accessibility, and sharing of information resources across diverse users and collections.
