We are adding a
Senior Inland Marine Underwriter
to the team! You will be responsible for underwriting, managing, and growing a profitable Inland Marine portfolio. Accountable for disciplined risk selection, pricing, and coverage analysis across Inland Marine classes with a strong focus on builder's risk and contractor's equipment while maintaining rate adequacy and strong loss ratio performance. Partners closely with brokers and internal stakeholders to support new business development, renewals, and overall portfolio optimization within delegated authority and program guidelines.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Build, manage, and profitably grow an Inland Marine portfolio, producing $2–3M in annual new business and scaling to $10M in total written premium within five years, with a focus on rate adequacy, portfolio mix, and loss ratio performance.
Underwrite a broad range of Inland Marine classes (including contractor's equipment, motor truck cargo, installation floater, builders risk, and transportation-related exposures) in accordance with underwriting appetite, authority, filed forms, endorsements, and capacity guidelines.
Evaluate submissions using detailed exposure analysis, TIV/NAV assessment, loss history, CAT aggregation, risk controls, and pricing models to ensure disciplined risk selection and profitability.
Maintain complete underwriting files, including documentation of coverage analysis, pricing rationale, terms and conditions, endorsements, and compliance requirements.
Develop and sustain strong broker relationships through regular contact, pipeline management, stewardship meetings, and market-facing sales initiatives.
Participate in broker presentations, industry events, and targeted sales campaigns to drive submission flow and territory growth.
Monitor book performance metrics (premium, retention, rate change, loss trends) and proactively adjust appetite and strategy as needed.
Travel minimally to moderately based on territory, broker engagement, and account needs.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum 5+ years of Inland Marine underwriting experience within a commercial or specialty lines environment.
Bachelor's degree required; equivalent industry experience will be considered.
Demonstrated expertise in coverage analysis, pricing, risk selection, and portfolio management for Inland Marine products.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess complex exposures and make sound underwriting decisions within delegated authority.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to negotiate terms and articulate underwriting rationale to brokers and internal stakeholders.
Proven ability to work independently while effectively partnering with cross‐functional teams in a production underwriting environment.
LOCATION
This is a remote role based anywhere in the United States.
COMPENSATION AND PERKS
$160,000 - $180,000 base salary plus yearly cash bonus. Salary commensurate with knowledge, skills, experience, and geographic location.
