Job Description Summary:
The Cashier will interact with James Monroe's Highland visitors in ticket sales, wayfinding assistance, and sale of Museum Shop Merchandise.
The Cashier also assists the Museum Shop Manager in daily operations of stocking and display of merchandise and light cleaning of display areas in the Museum Shop.
Additional support responsibilities may be required.
Job Description:
Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of retail operations including cash and credit card transactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to reconcile inventory and daily transaction reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, and write as well as follow oral and written instructions.
    Demonstrated ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with the willingness to provide excellent
    customer service.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with the public as well as internal staff.
  • Previous experience with or familiarity of the Albemarle-Charlottesville area; with the
    ability to provide tourist information to visitors.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience working in retail sales and using a cash register.
  • Familiarity with stocking of inventory and merchandise display.

Conditions of Employment:
  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor. Overtime hours to be worked require pre-approval by supervisor.
  • All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control
    Program and total hours worked may not exceed, on average, 28 hours per week, over
    the course of a twelve month period beginning May 1 each year.
  • Some nights and weekend work is required.
  • The position is located in Albemarle County, Virginia.

Job Duties:
40% - Sale of tickets to visitors and orient visitors to the learning experiences at Highland.
30% - Sale of Museum Shop inventory.
15% - Interact with visitors to enhance their experience at James Monroe's Highland and in the
Charlottesville-Albemarle area by providing information as needed.
15% - Clean and re-stock display areas.
