Position: 100% Remote
Contract: 13 Weeks (Temp-to-Perm)

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Clinical Documentation Specialist to perform inpatient clinical documentation integrity reviews in an acute-care hospital setting. The CDS will review medical records, identify documentation opportunities, conduct compliant provider queries, and support accurate coding, DRG assignment, quality outcomes, and reimbursement.


Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of direct inpatient Clinical Documentation Specialist/CDI experience in an acute-care hospital.
  • Inpatient CDI experience is required; inpatient coding experience alone does not qualify.
  • Outpatient-only CDI or coding experience will not be considered.
  • Active CCS, CDIP, or CCDS certification is required at submission.
  • Strong knowledge of clinical criteria, clinical validation, and inpatient documentation requirements.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, MS-DRGs, MCC/CC capture, CMI, Severity of Illness, and Risk of Mortality.
  • Experience creating compliant, non-leading provider queries.
  • Strong understanding of disease processes, clinical indicators, treatments, and procedures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Healthcare-related education.
  • RN or clinical nursing background.
  • Optum CAC experience.
  • Experience with Coding Clinic guidance and inpatient coding guidelines.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform concurrent reviews of inpatient acute-care medical records.
  • Complete approximately 15–16 initial and follow-up chart reviews per day.
  • Apply clinical criteria to determine whether diagnoses are clinically supported.
  • Identify incomplete, conflicting, ambiguous, or unsupported documentation.
  • Develop and submit compliant, non-leading provider queries.
  • Conduct follow-up reviews and evaluate provider responses.
  • Review documentation for accurate diagnosis and procedure capture and appropriate DRG assignment.
  • Identify opportunities affecting MCC/CC capture, CMI, SOI, ROM, quality measures, reimbursement, and regulatory reporting.
  • Collaborate with physicians, Coding, Quality, Revenue Cycle, Compliance, and other healthcare teams.
  • Educate providers on documentation requirements and improvement opportunities.
  • Support clinical validation, denial prevention, audits, and other CDI initiatives.
  • Maintain knowledge of current CDI practices, clinical criteria, coding guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Consistently meet productivity, query, quality, and accuracy expectations.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with applicable privacy and regulatory standards.


Schedule & Training

  • Initial training: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM ET for approximately 1–2 weeks.
  • After training: Flexible scheduling between 6:00 AM–6:00 PM ET, based on productivity and quality.
  • Some weekend scheduling may be available.
  • Eastern Time Zone candidates are preferred.
