What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote BOM Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote BOM (Bill of Materials) Engineer, you need expertise in engineering principles, BOM management, and strong analytical skills, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency with PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) systems, ERP software, and CAD tools is commonly required, along with certifications in relevant platforms. Attention to detail, effective communication, and strong organizational skills are vital soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure accurate BOM creation and maintenance, efficient cross-functional collaboration, and support for seamless production and supply chain operations.

What are the main challenges a Remote BOM Engineer may face when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

As a Remote BOM Engineer, one common challenge is ensuring clear and consistent communication with design, manufacturing, and procurement teams, especially when coordinating across different time zones and digital platforms. Misalignment in product specifications or revision updates can lead to errors in the Bill of Materials, impacting production schedules. To overcome these challenges, it's essential to establish structured communication channels, utilize collaborative BOM management tools, and proactively document changes. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are key to maintaining accuracy and efficiency in a remote setting.

What is a Remote BOM Engineer?

A Remote BOM (Bill of Materials) Engineer is a professional who creates, manages, and updates bills of materials for products or projects, working from a remote location. Their responsibilities typically include ensuring the accuracy of components, tracking changes, and collaborating with design, engineering, and manufacturing teams virtually. Remote BOM Engineers use specialized software to streamline product development and maintain clear documentation. They play a crucial role in manufacturing, electronics, and other industries that require precise component management.

What is the difference between Remote Bom Engineer vs Remote PCB Designer?

AspectRemote Bom EngineerRemote PCB Designer
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, BOM management certificationsElectrical engineering or PCB design certifications
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with manufacturing and procurement teams remotelyWorks with engineering teams on PCB layouts remotely
Industry UsageElectronics manufacturing, supply chainElectronics, consumer devices, aerospace
Common Search/ComparisonOften compared for electronics product development roles

Remote Bom Engineers focus on managing and optimizing bills of materials for manufacturing, while Remote PCB Designers specialize in creating and refining printed circuit board layouts. Both roles require technical certifications and often work remotely within electronics industries, but they serve different stages of product development.

Job description

About Fluidstack
We exist to make humanity more free. For most of human history, you farmed or you starved. Technology gave people more time for the things they wanted to do, instead of things they had to do. Powerful AI will be the biggest lever for human choice we've ever built - but only if models are aligned with what humanity actually wants. There are groups building AI who don't share these goals. Whoever deploys frontier compute infrastructure fastest will decide whether AI expands human freedom or shrinks it.
We're singularly focused on delivering 10 to 100s of GWs of compute faster than anyone else, rethinking every layer of the stack. We acquire power, design and build data centers, and operate them - with teams spanning hardware and software. Speed and scale are our key differentiators. Come be a part of building civilization-scale infrastructure for AI.
We hire people who care deeply about this problem space. If that is you, please apply!
About the Role
Infrastructure Deployment Engineer is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in fiber optics, structured cabling, and data center physical infrastructure. The IDE is responsible for the full lifecycle of physical installation projects, including coordinating LVC schedules, performing rigorous Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) checks on contractor work, and ensuring final installation adheres to all design standards, safety codes, and labeling policies.
Key Responsibilities
1. Project Oversight & Contractor Management
  • Serve as the primary on-site technical point of contact for the Low Voltage Contractor (LVC) and internal engineering teams.
  • Manage the LVC's deployment schedule, ensuring adherence to project milestones and reporting progress and delays to project management.
  • Coordinate access, material delivery, and staging areas with data center facility operations.
  • Act as a remote hands expert for remote engineering teams during deployment and validation activities.

2. Quality Assurance (QA) & Quality Control (QC)
  • Perform comprehensive, multi-stage QA inspections on all LVC work, including rack placement, server/device racking, cable routing, and labeling.
  • Ensure all infrastructure, including racks, servers, network devices, and storage units, are installed and grounded according to specified Bill of Materials (BoM) and design documentation.
  • Fiber Optic and Cabling Validation:
    • Conduct or directly oversee optical loss testing (OLTS), OTDR analysis, and insertion/return loss evaluations on all installed fiber links (Single-Mode and Multi-Mode).
    • Verify copper (Cat6a/Cat8) cable integrity and pin-out using certified testers.
    • Ensure all patch panels, trunks, patch cords, and cable management systems comply with code.
  • Manage vendor/partner relationships, contracts, and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for installation quality.

3. Subject Matter Expertise & Documentation
  • Act as the organization's SME for fiber optic infrastructure and structured cabling best practices (e.g., BICSI standards).
  • Review, interpret, and validate design documentation, rack elevation diagrams, and fiber schematics for constructability.
  • Generate detailed final test reports, as-built documentation, and root cause analysis (RCA) reports for any issues encountered during deployment.
  • Educate and coach internal full-time employees on fiber maintenance and cable management best practices.
  • Manage closeout activities and handoff to the operations team.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or a related field)
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in data center or mission-critical infrastructure deployment.
  • Travel Ready: Comfortable with 40% travel for extended onsite deployments during datacenter turn-ups. Remote-based but willing to be wherever the work is. You understand that deployment leadership means showing up when it's hard.
  • Deep technical expertise (SME level) in fiber optic systems, including design standards, installation techniques, and advanced testing methodologies (OTDR, VFL, Power Meter).
  • Proven experience in physical infrastructure installation, including the racking, stacking, and cabling of servers, network, and storage hardware.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and translate technical drawings and schematics (e.g., AutoCAD, Visio).
  • Strong organizational skills with a proven track record of driving projects to completion and dealing well with ambiguity.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Industry certifications such as BICSI RCDD or relevant vendor certifications (e.g., Cisco, Juniper).
  • Experience with hyperscale or large-scale data center environments and standardization programs.
  • Familiarity with IT service operations frameworks (e.g., ITIL).

Salary & Benefits
  • Competitive total compensation package (salary + equity).
  • Retirement or pension plan, in line with local norms.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Generous PTO policy, in line with local norms.

The base salary range for this position is $150,000 - $250,000 per year, depending on experience, skills, qualifications, and location. This range represents our good faith estimate of the compensation for this role at the time of posting. Total compensation may also include equity in the form of stock options.
We are committed to pay equity and transparency.
