As of Jul 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for remote biomedical engineering internship in the United States is $19.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.11 and $20.91 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some typical projects or tasks assigned to interns during a remote biomedical engineering internship?

During a remote biomedical engineering internship, interns often work on projects such as data analysis from medical devices, literature reviews for ongoing research, computer-aided design (CAD) for prototypes, and developing or testing software for biomedical applications. Interns may also assist with documentation for regulatory compliance or collaborate with multidisciplinary teams through virtual meetings. These experiences help interns build technical skills and gain practical insight into the biomedical engineering field, even while working remotely.

What is a Remote Biomedical Engineering Internship?

A Remote Biomedical Engineering Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in biomedical engineering while working remotely, often from home. Interns typically assist with research, data analysis, design, or testing of biomedical devices and technologies under the supervision of experienced engineers. This type of internship allows participants to develop technical and professional skills, collaborate with teams online, and contribute to real-world biomedical projects without needing to be physically present at a company location. It's a valuable opportunity for those interested in combining engineering with healthcare innovation.

What is the difference between Remote Biomedical Engineering Internship vs Remote Biomedical Equipment Technician?

AspectRemote Biomedical Engineering InternshipRemote Biomedical Equipment Technician
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or holding a degree in biomedical engineering or related fieldTechnical certification or associate degree in biomedical equipment technology
Work EnvironmentPrimarily remote, involving research, design, and development tasksRemote troubleshooting, maintenance, and support of medical equipment
Employer & Industry UsageHospitals, medical device companies, research institutionsHospitals, clinics, medical device service providers

The Remote Biomedical Engineering Internship focuses on gaining experience in research, design, and development of medical devices, often in a remote setting. In contrast, the Remote Biomedical Equipment Technician primarily involves remote support, maintenance, and troubleshooting of medical equipment. Both roles require technical knowledge but differ in their focus and work environment, making the internship ideal for students or early-career professionals seeking industry exposure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Biomedical Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Biomedical Engineering Intern, you need a solid understanding of biomedical engineering principles, coursework in biology and engineering, and preferably enrollment in a related degree program. Familiarity with CAD software, programming languages (such as MATLAB or Python), and common data analysis tools is often expected. Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills are essential for collaborating virtually and managing independent tasks. These competencies ensure interns can contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt to remote teamwork, and develop solutions in a dynamic, technology-driven field.

Job description

Job Description:

The Advanced Visualization Engineering Internship provides hands-on experience supporting Intermountain Health's IMPACT Center, a specialized engineering team focused on patient-specific care, advanced visualization, medical device development, digital healthcare innovation, and additive manufacturing technologies. Interns contribute directly to clinical and operational initiatives involving 3D printing, biomedical engineering, digital workflow transformation, medical imaging, patient-specific modeling, and emerging healthcare technologies.
This position is designed to provide meaningful real-world experience while supporting production, operational, research, and implementation activities across multiple clinical specialties. Preference will be given to Master's and PhD students pursuing Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Engineering, or closely related engineering disciplines with research or practical experience in computational modeling, fluid mechanics, cardiovascular modeling, medical devices, additive manufacturing, advanced visualization, or patient-specific healthcare technologies.

This position is on-site and is not eligible for hybrid or remote work.

Schedule: The position offers some flexibility up to 40 hours per week, with an expected commitment of 30-40 hours during standard business hours (8:00 AM - 5:00 PM). Occasional support outside standard hours, including holidays or weekends, may be required to support operational needs, production deadlines, or time-sensitive clinical requests.

*Preferred skills include:

  • 3D Printing, additive manufacturing, and CAD applied to anatomical simulation and modeling for patient specialized applications
  • In a graduate engineering program pursuing Biomedical, Biomechanical, Mechanical, or Computational Engineering
  • Medical Device Design and Prototyping
