Job description

Job Title: Systems Engineer II – Automation & Infrastructure Engineering
Location:  Remote in US
Role: Contract/Fulltime
 
 
Job Description:
The Systems Engineer II is a senior-level engineering role responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and automating large-scale infrastructure systems. The role works closely with development, system administration, and security teams to improve system reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency through automation and modern DevOps practices.
The engineer will support enterprise infrastructure environments including virtualization platforms, Kubernetes clusters, Linux/Windows systems, and storage/networking components, with a strong focus on infrastructure automation and integration.

Key Responsibilities
1. Automation Engineering & Delivery
  • Develop custom automation scripts and code to integrate platform components and address infrastructure gaps.
  • Design, build, test, and deploy automation solutions for provisioning, monitoring, and configuration of infrastructure systems.
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines using modern DevOps tools.
  • Convert manual operational processes into automated workflows for improved efficiency and reliability.

2. Systems Integration & Reporting
  • Design and implement system and data integrations across distributed infrastructure environments.
  • Automate operational reporting including SLA metrics, utilization statistics, and capacity forecasting.
  • Support integration between internal systems, applications, and infrastructure platforms.

3. Infrastructure Engineering
  • Design and maintain:
    • Hypervisor clusters
    • Kubernetes/container platforms
    • Linux and Windows virtual machines
    • Storage and network infrastructure systems
  • Support large-scale distributed server environments and software upgrade cycles.
  • Ensure system availability, scalability, and performance optimization.

4. Quality, Standards & Documentation
  • Perform peer reviews of code and automation scripts.
  • Define and maintain engineering standards, operational processes, and documentation.
  • Create technical documentation including architecture diagrams, SOPs, and operational guides (MOPs/runbooks).
  • Ensure compliance with internal security and engineering standards.

5. Research & Enablement
  • Research emerging technologies and best practices in automation, infrastructure, and cloud systems.
  • Train and support engineering and operations teams on automation tools and processes.
  • Promote adoption of infrastructure automation across teams.

6. Operational Support
  • Participate in on-call rotations, including evenings and weekends as required.
  • Support incident resolution in collaboration with infrastructure and security teams.
  • Work closely with InfoSec teams to remediate vulnerabilities and security issues.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in systems engineering, infrastructure automation, or application engineering.
  • 5+ years working in large-scale, distributed enterprise infrastructure environments.
  • Experience supporting development and system administration teams in enterprise environments.
  • Strong background in networking, server systems, and infrastructure operations.
  • Experience with large-scale software upgrades and distributed system maintenance.
  • Familiarity with telecom or large service provider environments is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure lifecycle management and operational processes.
