Remote Biology Startup information

What is a remote biology startup?

A remote biology startup is a company focused on biological research, innovation, or product development that operates primarily through remote work. Employees and collaborators usually work from different locations, communicating and conducting experiments or analyses using digital tools, cloud-based laboratories, and virtual collaboration platforms. These startups often focus on areas such as biotechnology, bioinformatics, health tech, or environmental biology, leveraging technology to innovate within the life sciences. Remote biology startups offer flexibility and the ability to attract global talent, but may face challenges in managing laboratory work and maintaining effective communication.

What are some unique challenges of working at a remote biology startup, and how can I prepare for them?

Working at a remote biology startup often means collaborating with a distributed team while handling complex scientific projects. Challenges can include coordinating lab work across different locations, maintaining clear communication with colleagues in various time zones, and adapting to rapidly evolving project goals. To prepare, you should be comfortable using digital collaboration tools, stay proactive in communication, and remain flexible as priorities shift. Embracing a self-driven work ethic and seeking regular feedback will help you thrive in this dynamic environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive at a remote biology startup, and why are they important?

To thrive at a remote biology startup, you need a solid background in biological sciences, research methods, and data analysis, often supported by an advanced degree in biology or a related field. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools, laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and collaboration platforms like Slack or Zoom is highly beneficial. Strong self-motivation, adaptability, and effective virtual communication are crucial soft skills for working independently and within remote teams. These abilities ensure scientific rigor, seamless remote collaboration, and agile problem-solving in a dynamic startup environment.

We’re seeking a Field Ops Specialist to temporarily join our Consulting Team. This vital role supports the startup of client laboratories by traveling onsite to provide setup, training, troubleshooting, validations, and other critical functions. You’ll be the key partner in getting client labs testing live in a quick, efficient, and compliant way.
This is a temporary assignment expected to continue through approximately mid-October, with the possibility of extension based on business need.

If you enjoy hands-on laboratory work, travel, and making an immediate impact, we’d love to hear from you!

What You’ll Do

  • Travel weekly (~80%) to client sites to support laboratory startups.

  • Install instruments, perform validations, and train lab personnel.

  • Troubleshoot technical issues and advise on lab workflows, layouts, and equipment.

  • Collaborate with Quality and Operations leaders to implement corrective/preventive actions.

  • Prepare reports, maintain quality control charts, and create/verify lab records.

  • Support compliance documentation, training, and process improvements.

  • When not traveling, assist with data verification, reporting, and client/team consultation.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Molecular Biology, or Medical Laboratory Sciences.

  • Minimum 3 years of high-complexity lab experience, including 2+ years in LCMS data analysis.

  • Hands-on experience with LCMS platforms (ABSciex, Agilent, Shimadzu). Familiarity with clinical analyzers (AU, Indiko, or similar).

  • Skilled in technologist training with the ability to guide lab staff.

  • Candidates located near a national airport, preferably in the Charlotte, NC or Dallas, TX area.

  • Preferred:

    • LCMS method development & troubleshooting.

    • Infectious disease testing using rtPCR platforms (QuantStudio, QIAquant, etc.).

    • Statistical analysis with EP Evaluator or spreadsheets.

    • National certification (NRCC, MLS(ASCP), MB(ASCP)).

Why Join Lighthouse?

  • Salary Range $70,000 - $80,000 annually

  • Day 1 Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage

  • 401(k) with up to 4% company match

  • Company-paid life and disability insurance
