Remote Biology Startup information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive at a remote biology startup, and why are they important?

To thrive at a remote biology startup, you need a solid background in biological sciences, research methods, and data analysis, often supported by an advanced degree in biology or a related field. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools, laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and collaboration platforms like Slack or Zoom is highly beneficial. Strong self-motivation, adaptability, and effective virtual communication are crucial soft skills for working independently and within remote teams. These abilities ensure scientific rigor, seamless remote collaboration, and agile problem-solving in a dynamic startup environment.

What is a remote biology startup?

A remote biology startup is a company focused on biological research, innovation, or product development that operates primarily through remote work. Employees and collaborators usually work from different locations, communicating and conducting experiments or analyses using digital tools, cloud-based laboratories, and virtual collaboration platforms. These startups often focus on areas such as biotechnology, bioinformatics, health tech, or environmental biology, leveraging technology to innovate within the life sciences. Remote biology startups offer flexibility and the ability to attract global talent, but may face challenges in managing laboratory work and maintaining effective communication.

What is the difference between Remote Biology Startup vs Remote Laboratory Technician?

AspectRemote Biology StartupRemote Laboratory Technician
Required CredentialsBiology degree, relevant certificationsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Laboratory Science or related field
Work EnvironmentVirtual, collaborative online platformsRemote, often with specialized lab software
Employer & Industry UsageStartups, biotech firms, research companiesResearch labs, biotech companies, healthcare providers
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding roles in biotech startupsComparing lab-based roles in biotech

Remote Biology Startup roles focus on research, data analysis, and project management within startup environments, often requiring a broader understanding of biology and tech tools. Remote Laboratory Technicians perform technical lab tasks, often with specialized equipment and procedures. Both roles share a need for biology credentials but differ in work setting and daily responsibilities.

What are some unique challenges of working at a remote biology startup, and how can I prepare for them?

Working at a remote biology startup often means collaborating with a distributed team while handling complex scientific projects. Challenges can include coordinating lab work across different locations, maintaining clear communication with colleagues in various time zones, and adapting to rapidly evolving project goals. To prepare, you should be comfortable using digital collaboration tools, stay proactive in communication, and remain flexible as priorities shift. Embracing a self-driven work ethic and seeking regular feedback will help you thrive in this dynamic environment.

Job description

We are always looking for exceptional engineers interested in building the future of AI-enabled drug development, predictive biology, and computational safety infrastructure. If you are excited about working at the intersection of AI, biotech, translational medicine, and scalable scientific systems, we would love to hear from you.

About the Role

Absentia Labs is building AI-driven mechanistic toxicology and translational safety infrastructure designed to improve how biological risk and organ-level toxicity are understood earlier in drug development. Our platform integrates large-scale biological, chemical, and experimental datasets to support predictive, human-relevant safety assessment and New Approach Methodologies (NAMs).

We are looking for highly motivated engineers with broad backgrounds who are excited to solve technically challenging problems in AI, biology, infrastructure, and scientific computing. This is a general application for candidates who may fit current or future engineering needs as the company grows.

Areas of interest may include:

  • Machine learning and AI infrastructure

  • Computational biology and bioinformatics

  • Backend and distributed systems

  • Data engineering and data platforms

  • Scientific software engineering

  • Full-stack product engineering

  • Cloud infrastructure and MLOps

  • Applied AI research

  • Visualization and scientific interfaces

What We Look For
  • Strong technical fundamentals and problem-solving ability

  • Interest in mission-driven work within biotechnology and healthcare

  • Ability to operate in fast-moving, ambiguous startup environments

  • Curiosity, ownership, and willingness to learn across disciplines

  • Experience building scalable systems, models, or products

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Nice to Have
  • Experience in biotech, healthcare, life sciences, or scientific computing

  • Familiarity with machine learning workflows or biological datasets

  • Startup or early-stage company experience

  • Interest in translational medicine, toxicology, or computational drug development

Location

Hybrid and remote-friendly depending on role. Preference for candidates open to working closely with the founding team in Boston.

Why Absentia Labs
  1. Work on scientifically meaningful problems with real-world impact

  2. Help shape a foundational platform at the intersection of AI and biology

  3. Collaborate with pharmaceutical, academic, and regulatory stakeholders

  4. Early-stage ownership and opportunity for outsized impact

  5. Mission-driven team focused on improving translational safety and reducing unnecessary animal testing
