What Does a Remote BI Developer Do?

As a remote BI developer, you work from home or otherwise remotely to design and program software that supports a company's business intelligence needs. To accomplish this, you may use SQL to store and organize data, determine which types of analytics to use with your software, and ensure your software can create each type of report your client asks for. Remote BI developers frequently create complex SQL queries that pull data from multiple sources, translate user requirements into programming objectives, and coordinate with database and infrastructure teams. You may also help create tools to store data, conduct testing, update existing software, and help assess future business intelligence needs.

What are Remote BI Developers?

Remote BI (Business Intelligence) Developers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain business intelligence solutions like dashboards, reports, and data models while working from a remote location. They use tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or SQL to analyze data and help organizations make informed decisions. Remote BI Developers collaborate with stakeholders virtually to understand requirements and deliver actionable insights, ensuring that data is accurate, accessible, and secure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote BI Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote BI Developer, you need strong analytical skills, experience with data modeling, and proficiency in SQL, typically supported by a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Job description

Halvik Corp delivers a wide range of services to 13 executive agencies and 15 independent agencies. Halvik is a highly successful WOB business with more than 50 prime contracts and 500+ professionals delivering Digital Services, Advanced Analytics, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Cyber Security and Cutting-Edge Technology across the US Government. Be a part of something special!

Position Overview

Halvik is seeking an experienced BI Developer to support a high-visibility federal data modernization program. This role will support the migration of legacy business intelligence reports from an Oracle Data Warehouse / OBIEE reporting environment into modern Tableau dashboards connected to a cloud-based data platform using Databricks and cloud-native data pipelines.

This is a hands-on delivery role for a technically complex reporting modernization effort. The BI Developer will analyze legacy report logic, translate calculations and business rules into Tableau, support report template development, validate outputs, and work closely with Tableau Developers, Data Engineers, QA resources, Business Analysts, and Project Manager to ensure migrated reports preserve required business functionality.

The ideal candidate has strong SQL skills, practical experience with legacy BI/reporting platforms, hands-on Tableau development capability, and the ability to bridge old and new reporting environments. This role requires someone who can understand how legacy reports work, identify reusable report patterns, support high-volume report migration, and contribute directly to Tableau dashboard generation, validation, and UAT support.

Core Responsibilities

  • Analyze legacy BI reports, dashboards, prompts, filters, calculations, aggregations, and business rules to support migration into Tableau.
  • Translate legacy report logic into Tableau calculations, parameters, filters, data source logic, and visualization patterns.
  • Support hands-on Tableau report and dashboard generation using established templates, standards, and reusable migration patterns.
  • Work with BI Leads and Tableau Developers to identify common report structures, reusable layouts, and opportunities for template-based report conversion.
  • Write and execute SQL queries to validate report outputs, reconcile metrics, troubleshoot discrepancies, and confirm source-to-target parity.
  • Support data validation across legacy source systems, Oracle data marts, Databricks outputs, and Tableau reports.
  • Document report logic, calculations, assumptions, source-to-target mappings, validation steps, and migration decisions.
  • Collaborate with Data Engineers and Data Architects to clarify data availability, transformation logic, field definitions, and data model impacts.
  • Assist with report rationalization by identifying duplicate, similar, obsolete, or template-compatible reports.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, sprint planning, backlog refinement, report demos, defect triage, and migration status discussions.
  • Contribute to migration playbooks, report conversion standards, validation procedures, and knowledge transfer materials.

Minimum Requirements

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Analytics, Business Analytics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience in BI development, reporting, data analysis, report migration, or data validation.
  • Extensive experience working with legacy BI/reporting platforms such as OBIEE, Oracle Analytics, or similar tools.
  • Hands-on experience developing or modifying Tableau reports, dashboards, calculations, filters, parameters, and data sources.
  • Strong SQL skills, including experience writing queries for validation, reconciliation, troubleshooting, joins, aggregations, and data comparison.
  • Experience analyzing report logic, calculations, filters, prompts, data mappings, and business rules.
  • Understanding of data warehouse concepts, dimensional models, data marts, ETL processes, and BI reporting architectures.
  • Ability to work effectively with BI developers, data engineers, business analysts, QA resources, and project leadership in an Agile delivery environment.

Preferred Expertise

  • Direct experience with OBIEE, Oracle Analytics Server, Oracle BI Catalog, RPD metadata, dashboards, analyses, prompts, and report calculations.
  • Experience supporting OBIEE-to-Tableau, Oracle-to-Tableau, or similar BI modernization efforts.
  • Experience with report inventories, report rationalization, source-to-target mapping, data lineage, or metadata analysis.
  • Experience with Tableau data source design, dashboard performance tuning, publishing, permissions, and report validation.
  • Exposure to Databricks, Lakehouse architecture, medallion architecture, Delta Lake, or similar modern data platforms.

Halvik offers a competitive full benefits package including:
Company-supported medical, dental, vision, life, STD, and LTD insurance
Benefits include 11 federal holidays and PTO
Eligible employees may receive performance-based incentives in recognition of individual and/or team achievements.
401(k) with company matching
