What Does a Remote BI Developer Do?

As a remote BI developer, you work from home or otherwise remotely to design and program software that supports a company's business intelligence needs. To accomplish this, you may use SQL to store and organize data, determine which types of analytics to use with your software, and ensure your software can create each type of report your client asks for. Remote BI developers frequently create complex SQL queries that pull data from multiple sources, translate user requirements into programming objectives, and coordinate with database and infrastructure teams. You may also help create tools to store data, conduct testing, update existing software, and help assess future business intelligence needs.

What are Remote BI Developers?

Remote BI (Business Intelligence) Developers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain business intelligence solutions like dashboards, reports, and data models while working from a remote location. They use tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or SQL to analyze data and help organizations make informed decisions. Remote BI Developers collaborate with stakeholders virtually to understand requirements and deliver actionable insights, ensuring that data is accurate, accessible, and secure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote BI Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote BI Developer, you need strong analytical skills, experience with data modeling, and proficiency in SQL, typically supported by a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Familiarity with BI tools like Power BI, Tableau, or Qlik, as well as knowledge of ETL processes and data warehousing, is commonly required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for collaborating remotely and translating business needs into technical solutions. These skills ensure effective data-driven decision-making and seamless integration of BI solutions in a remote work environment.

Both roles are often remote and industry-wide, but their core responsibilities and skill sets differ slightly.

How does a Remote BI Developer typically collaborate with data teams and stakeholders while working offsite?

As a Remote BI Developer, collaboration is often achieved through a mix of virtual meetings, project management platforms, and shared documentation tools. You’ll frequently interact with data engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders to gather requirements, clarify data sources, and ensure that dashboards and reports meet business needs. Regular check-ins and clear communication are essential to stay aligned on project goals, address data discrepancies, and deliver timely solutions. AIR's Tek Office is seeking an experienced Power BI Developer to join its talented group. The Power BI Developer will work closely with the AIR Modernization team and stakeholders across multiple business domains to implement an enterprise analytics platform and deliver interactive dashboards, reports, and semantic models that enable informed decision-making. This position reports into the Technology Office.

This position offers hybrid work flexibility, requiring three days per week in AIR's Virginia office, with occasional travel for meetings, training sessions, and conferences.

About AIR:

Founded in 1946 and headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, the American Institutes for Research (AIR) is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization that conducts behavioral and social science research and delivers technical assistance to address some of the most pressing challenges in the United States and globally. We generate evidence and apply data-driven solutions that expand opportunities and improve lives for all.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, development, and lifecycle management of Power BI solutions (semantic models, dashboards, and reports) across multiple business domains and the enterprise.
  • Partner with business and technical stakeholders to translate requirements into clear user stories, data definitions, and reusable reporting patterns.
  • Model data using dimensional best practices (e.g., star schema) and write optimized DAX to deliver performant, maintainable analytics.

  • Leverage Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse/Warehouse/OneLake, as applicable) to implement scalable and secure data storage, processing, and semantic model strategies.
  • Own operational excellence for BI solutions, including refresh reliability, monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.
  • Implement and maintain security and governance practices (workspace strategy, permissions, RLS/OLS, endorsement/certification practices, and documentation).
  • Support a healthy delivery process by contributing to standards, code reviews, and deployment practices (e.g., dev/test/prod, version control, and release coordination).
  • Mentor junior BI developers and enable business users through training, best practices, and adoption support.
  • Stay current with Microsoft analytics platform capabilities and recommend enhancements that improve usability, reliability, and value.
  • Responsibilities may change based on business needs.

Qualifications:

Education, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data/Analytics, or a related field or at least 5 years of experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in Business Intelligence or analytics engineering, with a strong focus on Power BI solution delivery.
  • Advanced experience with Power BI (semantic models, DAX, Power Query) and strong SQL skills, with handson work in Microsoft Fabric (Warehouse/Lakehouse), modern data management practices, and building/supporting ETL/ELT pipelines integrating enterprise applications such as Dynamics 365 or similar systems.
  • Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst (PL300) or relevant Microsoft Fabric/Power Platform certifications, along with experience in governance frameworks, environment strategy, and administration across Power BI and the broader Power Platform is preferred.
  • Experience working in agile environments using tools such as Jira and Confluence, with a solid understanding of dimensional modeling, data quality, lineage, and endtoend data pipeline operations.
  • Experience using Microsoft Graph API for automation, integration, and advanced reporting scenarios is preferred, but not required.

Skills

  • Strong communicator able to engage senior leaders and both technical and nontechnical stakeholders, clearly conveying concepts, solutions, and tradeoffs.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with remote and geographically dispersed teams, fostering alignment and shared understanding.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities in fastpaced environments, showing strong ownership, accountability, and attention to quality.
  • Collaborative and analytical problemsolver with strong criticalthinking skills, mentoring capabilities, and the ability to help establish and promote best practices.
