Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Applied Research Scientist (Machine Visibility) based in Netherlands.

This is a unique opportunity to pioneer research in the emerging field of machine visibility, exploring how AI systems, search crawlers, and autonomous agents interact with the modern web. As the first dedicated research specialist in this domain, you will build the research function from the ground up while working with one of the industry's largest datasets of web crawling behavior. You will design original studies, develop scalable research infrastructure, and generate insights that influence both product strategy and the broader technology ecosystem. The role combines large-scale data science, applied research, and strategic collaboration in a highly autonomous, remote-first environment. Your work will be published under your name, helping establish thought leadership in a rapidly evolving area of AI and web technologies. This position is ideal for researchers who enjoy transforming complex datasets into impactful discoveries with real-world applications.

Accountabilities
  • Build and maintain the research infrastructure required to organize, clean, and analyze large-scale web crawling and machine interaction datasets.
  • Design and execute original research projects from hypothesis development through methodology, statistical analysis, and publication.
  • Develop new data collection processes to expand research capabilities and answer emerging questions related to AI crawlers and machine visibility.
  • Analyze the behavior of search crawlers, AI bots, and autonomous agents while identifying trends across evolving machine ecosystems.
  • Produce research outputs ranging from short data-driven reports to comprehensive flagship studies published under your own authorship.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate research findings into actionable insights that support product development, business strategy, and market positioning.
  • Continuously monitor developments in AI search, web standards, structured data, and machine-readable technologies to inform future research priorities.
  • Leverage modern AI tools to accelerate data analysis, synthesis, experimentation, and research workflows.
Requirements
  • Proven experience conducting and publishing original research in either academic or industry settings.
  • Strong expertise in large-scale data analysis using SQL and Python.
  • Demonstrated ability to build research infrastructure and data pipelines rather than working solely with existing datasets.
  • Solid background in experimental design, hypothesis testing, statistical analysis, and evidence-based research methodologies.
  • Experience independently managing research projects from concept through publication.
  • Comfortable incorporating AI tools into research and analytical workflows.
  • Excellent written communication skills with the ability to present complex technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong curiosity, critical thinking, and the ability to work autonomously in an unstructured research environment.
  • Experience with AI crawler behavior, technical SEO, Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), information retrieval, or natural language processing is considered a strong advantage.
  • Public research publications, conference presentations, or recognized thought leadership in related fields are a plus.
Benefits
  • 100% remote position with preference for European time zone collaboration.
  • Opportunity to build and lead a brand-new research function with significant autonomy.
  • Access to a unique, web-scale dataset unavailable elsewhere in the industry.
  • Direct collaboration with executive leadership to shape long-term research strategy.
  • Publication of original research under your own name, supporting professional visibility and career growth.
  • Structured onboarding roadmap with clearly defined research objectives and milestones.
  • Learning and development budget for conferences, courses, tools, and professional resources.
  • International, collaborative, and remote-first working environment.
  • Transparent, market-aligned compensation shared before the interview process.
