Remote Bank Controller information

What is a remote bank controller?

Remote Bank Controllers are financial professionals who oversee and manage the accounting, financial reporting, and compliance operations of a bank from a remote location. They are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of financial statements, maintaining internal controls, and coordinating audits, often working with teams spread across different locations. This role leverages technology to perform traditional controller duties without the need to be physically present in the bank's office, allowing for flexibility and access to a broader talent pool.

How does a remote bank controller typically collaborate with branch teams and senior management to ensure accurate financial reporting?

As a Remote Bank Controller, you will frequently coordinate with branch accounting staff and senior management through virtual meetings and secure communication platforms. Your role involves consolidating financial data from multiple sources, addressing discrepancies, and providing guidance on regulatory compliance. Effective collaboration is essential, as you'll review monthly closings, analyze variances, and present findings to leadership. Building strong remote relationships and maintaining clear documentation are critical for ensuring the integrity of financial reports and facilitating smooth audits.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote bank controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Bank Controller, you need strong expertise in accounting principles, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and CPA certification. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, financial management software, and secure cloud-based collaboration tools is crucial. Exceptional attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to work independently are vital soft skills for success in this remote leadership role. These competencies ensure accurate financial oversight, regulatory adherence, and effective management of remote teams in a dynamic banking environment.

You will own the monthly close, financial reporting, and core accounting processes for our U.S. operations, while supporting global consolidation with our teams in India and Brazil.

This role is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys being close to the numbers, not just overseeing them, and who thrives in a lean, fast-moving environment where initiative and ownership are valued.

Qualifications

Top 5 Responsibilities:

  1. Own the U.S. monthly and annual close process, journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation in accordance with GAAP.
  2. Manage cash operations, AR/AP, and U.S. multi-state payroll; monitor cash flow and maintain accurate cash projections.
  3. Support global financial reporting, intercompany consolidations, transfer pricing documentation, and reporting for the India and Brazil entities.
  4. Serve as the day-to-day point of contact for external auditors and tax advisors on U.S. audit and tax matters; prepare audit schedules, PBC lists, and supporting documentation.
  5. Supervise, mentor, and develop a global accounting staff; document and continuously improve close processes and internal controls.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Prepare monthly financial statements and management reporting packages for the CEO
  • Assist with development and monitoring of the annual budget and rolling forecasts
  • Run project-based financial reports, including utilization, realization, and gross margin by project/client
  • Analyze monthly operating costs and variances, flagging issues to the CEO
  • Ensure timely and accurate U.S. federal and state tax filings, in coordination with outside tax advisors
  • Oversee bank reconciliations and reconcile balance sheet accounts
  • Ensure intercompany invoicing and transactions with India and Brazil operations are accurate and timely
  • Support the annual audit for U.S. operations, coordinating Brazil/India requirements
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal financial reporting requirements
  • Process and oversee U.S. multi-state payroll and benefits administration, ensuring payroll tax accuracy
  • Support review of customer and vendor contracts (MSAs & SOWs) from a financial and risk perspective
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting policies
  • Support ad hoc financial analyses and special projects as assigned by the CEO
  • Lead and develop the accounting, finance, HR, recruiting, and IT teams. Manage and mentor a few small teams across the US, India, and Brazil. Build scalable processes and drive continuous improvement

Top 5 Qualifications:

  1. Hands-on GAAP accounting experience, with exposure to IFRS given our international operations
  2. 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of the monthly close and financial statement preparation
  3. Experience in a multi-entity organization; professional services or technology services industry experience strongly preferred
  4. Proficiency with QuickBooks; experience with PSA tools such as NetSuite OpenAir a plus
  5. CPA or active CPA candidacy strongly preferred

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • U.S. multi-state payroll experience
  • Advanced skills with Excel
  • Experience preparing for and supporting external audits
  • Experience reviewing or supporting review of client/vendor contracts (MSA & SOW) from a financial perspective
  • Strong communication skills; comfortable presenting financial information to leadership
  • Ability to balance process ownership with hands-on execution in a lean team
  • Must be a team player, able to meet strict deadlines and work with minimal supervision

Preferred

  • Experience with Brazilian and/or Indian accounting or tax practices
  • Experience at a public accounting firm
  • Experience supporting international transfer pricing or intercompany accounting
  • Portuguese language skills a plus

  • Short and Long-Term Disability
  • Generous 401K plan after three months of employment
