Job description

Ready to lead the design of a next-generation Azure data platform? If you're an experienced data architect with deep expertise in Azure, Databricks, enterprise data platforms, and modern cloud architecture, we'd love to hear from you.
SYSCOM is seeking an experienced Azure Data Architect to support a major enterprise cloud modernization initiative. In this role, you'll lead the architecture and design of a modern Azure-based data environment, including data lakes, relational and non-relational databases, data integration, and enterprise data models. You'll work closely with technical and business teams to establish scalable, secure, and high-performing data solutions while providing architectural guidance and mentorship to architects and database engineers.
This is an opportunity to play a key role in modernizing a complex legacy data environment and helping establish the foundation for a next-generation enterprise data platform.
Project Duration: Approximately 10-month contract to start. Extensions may be available based on project needs but are not guaranteed.
Work Location: Remote/Hybrid. Candidates should be available to work onsite in St. Paul, MN, as needed for meetings, collaboration, or project requirements, but the primary work location will be remote.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support the design and implementation of solutions to improve, modernize, and transform data-driven service delivery.
  • Ensure data assets are structured, accessible, secure, and aligned with enterprise goals and standards.
  • Recommend data platforms, technologies, and tools to support enterprise data architecture.
  • Develop enterprise data models.
  • Ensure data access patterns are optimized.
  • Maintain necessary technical and architectural documentation.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to meet security and data governance standards.
  • Support the design and development of disaster recovery solutions.
  • Provide knowledge transfer and technical guidance to architects and database engineers.
Minimum / Required Qualifications
  • Approximately 10 years of experience in data architecture or data management.
  • Strong experience designing, developing, and implementing data lakes and relational and non-relational databases in Azure.
  • Strong experience with Databricks.
  • Experience developing and implementing data transformation solutions and cloud infrastructure integrations.
  • Experience coding and testing programs and scripts to load data using Azure data load utilities.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with cloud computing concepts.
  • Experience with tools such as Azure Monitor, Azure Data Factory, SQL Analytics, Query Performance Insight, Azure Resource Manager, Perl, and Azure CLI/PowerShell for infrastructure management.
  • Experience mentoring architects, engineers, or technical team members.
  • Experience developing and implementing backup and recovery strategies using tools such as Azure Backup or Geo-replication.
  • Experience with role-based access control (RBAC), encryption, and network security.
  • Knowledge of data concepts, data modeling, schema design, and indexing strategies.
  • Knowledge of Azure SQL instances, managed instances, and elastic pools.
Desired Qualifications
  • Strong experience with Oracle databases.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of Data Warehouse Administration and Teradata Data Warehouse.
