What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Automotive Embedded Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Automotive Embedded Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, embedded systems, and automotive standards like AUTOSAR, usually supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with programming languages such as C/C++, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and tools like CANoe, MATLAB/Simulink, and version control systems is essential. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-motivation are critical soft skills, especially in a remote work environment. These skills ensure the reliable development of automotive software, effective remote collaboration, and compliance with industry safety and quality standards.

What is a Remote Automotive Embedded Software Engineer?

A Remote Automotive Embedded Software Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software systems embedded within vehicles, such as control units, infotainment systems, and safety features, while working from a remote location. They use programming languages like C or C++ to create real-time applications that interact with automotive hardware. These engineers collaborate with teams virtually and often follow automotive standards such as AUTOSAR and ISO 26262 to ensure quality and safety. Their work is crucial to the advancement of connected and autonomous vehicles.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Automotive Embedded Software Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Automotive Embedded Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as effective communication with cross-functional teams, managing hardware access remotely, and ensuring real-time debugging. To address these, engineers typically leverage collaboration tools for regular check-ins, utilize remote access hardware labs or simulators, and maintain thorough documentation. Strong time management and proactive communication are essential to stay aligned with project milestones and quickly resolve technical issues.

What is the difference between Remote Automotive Embedded Software Engineer vs Remote Automotive Control Systems Engineer?

AspectRemote Automotive Embedded Software EngineerRemote Automotive Control Systems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related field; experience with embedded programmingBachelor's in Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering; knowledge of control algorithms
Work EnvironmentDevelops software for vehicle ECUs, often in collaboration with hardware teamsDesigns and tests vehicle control systems, integrating hardware and software
Industry UsageCommonly employed in automotive OEMs and suppliers focusing on embedded softwareUsed in automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers focusing on control system development

Both roles involve working in the automotive industry with a focus on vehicle systems. The Embedded Software Engineer primarily develops software for vehicle ECUs, while the Control Systems Engineer designs and tests control algorithms. They share similar credentials and work environments but differ in their specific focus areas within automotive system development.

Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, Moultrie (www.moultrie.com) is the leader in game feeders and cellular camera innovation, building products used by hunters, property owners, and others for real-time remote monitoring. We take pride in developing deep user understanding, obsessing about the details, and going the extra mile to show our users we love them. Moultrie is customer-driven - hardware, software, marketing, and customer success teams collaborate to deliver a quality user experience.

We are guided by the following principles: Customer Obsession.; Excellence is the Standard.; Bias for Action.; Act Boldly.; Deliver Results.; Hire and Develop the Best.; Be Curious and Learn.; Win as a Team

Job Summary

Moultrie is a leader in innovative products that inspire and excite hunters across the globe. We're seeking a results-driven Firmware Program Manager to own engineering and program timelines for the firmware and connectivity that run our connected cameras and feeders - the embedded systems, wireless connectivity (cellular, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi), and over-the-air update pipeline that keep our devices talking to the Moultrie app and cloud.ย This role leads cross-functional teams, manages engineering and program timelines, and ensures the delivery of high-quality firmware on time and within budget. The ideal candidate combines embedded systems expertise, project management excellence, and leadership to drive results.

Job Responsibilities

Strategic Planning: Partner with product management and hardware engineering to define firmware roadmaps, development goals, and key performance indicators (KPIs) for new programs.

Project Management: Lead cross-functional teams through all firmware development phases, including discovery, design, development, QA, staging, release, and post-launch support.

Budget & Schedule Management: Develop, monitor, and manage project budgets and timelines. Proactively identify and address potential delays or risks to keep firmware programs on schedule and within budget.

Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks across technical, security, and compliance areas throughout the firmware development lifecycle, including wireless certification and power management.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Facilitate communication and alignment between firmware engineering, electrical and mechanical hardware teams, app/cloud engineering, QA, and product to ensure cohesive product development.

Technical Expertise: Apply in-depth knowledge of embedded systems, RTOS and bare-metal firmware, wireless connectivity (cellular LTE/5G, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi), low-power design, and over-the-air (OTA) update mechanisms to guide informed decisions.

Quality Assurance: Oversee firmware QA processes, including unit, integration, and field testing, and release management to ensure firmware meets rigorous standards.

Release & DevOps Coordination: Manage firmware release schedules and OTA deployment pipelines, and coordinate with firmware and DevOps engineering to ensure smooth, reliable releases across the device fleet.

Post-Launch Support: Monitor firmware performance after launch - device stability, connectivity reliability, battery life, and support tickets - and implement improvements as needed.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field (Master's or MBA preferred).

Proven experience managing complex firmware or embedded systems programs from concept to release using Agile, Scrum, or hybrid project management methodologies.

Strong technical understanding of embedded firmware development, RTOS or bare-metal systems, and wireless connectivity (cellular, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi) for connected hardware products.

Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate cross-functional engineering teams, including firmware, electrical, and hardware, while managing multiple stakeholders.

Excellent communication skills, able to translate technical details to diverse audiences.

Strong analytical skills with the ability to make data-driven decisions.

Experience delivering firmware or embedded products on time, on budget, and to high-quality standards.

Knowledge of firmware release management, QA processes, and security/compliance considerations for connected products, including wireless carrier and FCC certification.

Essential Job Function

Experience as a Program Manager, Scrum Master, or similar leadership role in an embedded or firmware environment.

Experience with budgetary planning, cost tracking, and financial accountability for projects.

Familiarity with low-power battery management and solar-powered device design.
