Job Description:
Orbital is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our growing team in a REMOTE WORK role. This role will provide technical leadership for industrial electrical engineering projects supporting clients in the steel, power generation, refining, midstream oil & gas, petrochemical, and manufacturing markets. The successful candidate will serve as a technical leader, lead engineer, and client-facing representative responsible for delivering safe, reliable, and cost-effective engineering solutions.
Essential Functions
  • Lead electrical engineering and design efforts for capital and maintenance projects from concept through commissioning.
  • Develop and review electrical engineering deliverables including:

    • Single-line diagrams
    • Power distribution designs
    • Equipment layouts
    • Cable and conduit schedules
    • Cable tray and conduit routing plans
    • Grounding and lightning protection systems
    • Interconnecting wiring diagrams
    • Technical specifications and scopes of work

  • Perform and review engineering calculations for:

    • Load flow analysis
    • Short-circuit studies
    • Protective device coordination
    • Arc flash analysis
    • Motor starting analysis

  • Develop equipment data sheets, RFQs, technical bid evaluations, and equipment recommendations.
  • Participate in client meetings, site walkdowns, startup activities, and commissioning support.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering efforts with mechanical, structural, civil, process, and instrumentation teams.
  • Support proposal development, scope definition, and engineering estimates.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers and provide technical guidance across project teams.
  • Conduct design reviews and ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and quality procedures.
  • Support business development initiatives by serving as a trusted technical advisor to clients.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • 20+ years of electrical engineering experience in consulting environments
  • Strong understanding of:

    • Medium- and low-voltage power distribution systems
    • Substations and switchgear
    • Protective relaying systems
    • Motor control centers (MCCs)
    • Variable frequency drives (VFDs)
    • Emergency and standby power systems
    • Industrial grounding systems

  • Experience with electrical power system modeling software such as SKM, ETAP, or equivalent.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent written communication, technical report writing, and client interaction skills.
  • Ability to work independently while leading project teams and coordinating multiple concurrent assignments.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Project management experience managing engineering scope, budget, and schedule.

  • Familiarity with NETA testing standards, including acceptance testing, maintenance testing, commissioning, and condition assessment of electrical equipment in accordance with current industry practices.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70B, including principles of electrical equipment maintenance, reliability-centered maintenance strategies, condition-based maintenance programs, and asset lifecycle management.
  • Ability to interpret testing results, identify equipment deficiencies, develop corrective action recommendations, and support reliability improvement initiatives.

  • Multi-state engineering licensure

Location Note:
This is a remote work position. Compensation is based on market data and internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate's location.
Salary Range:
$140,000-200,000 annually (based on experience, qualifications, and location)
