What is a remote auditor?

Remote Auditors are professionals who perform audits and assessments of an organization's financial records, processes, or compliance standards from a location outside of the client's physical premises, often using digital tools and secure communication platforms. They review documents, conduct interviews, and analyze data virtually to ensure accuracy and regulatory compliance. Remote auditing has become increasingly popular as it allows greater flexibility, reduced travel costs, and easier access to global clients. Despite working remotely, auditors maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to the same standards as on-site audits.

What does a remote auditor do?

As a remote auditor, you perform a variety of accounting duties for a financial firm, bank, or another client. You audit your client’s statement and tax paperwork, review assets, and ensure that the firm or client is complying with all federal and state regulations regarding taxes and transparency. As an auditor, your responsibilities also include identifying areas where there are inefficiencies or financial waste in a company. Your reports allow managers and directors to come up with solutions to address the waste.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote auditor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Auditor, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid grasp of auditing standards, often backed by a degree in accounting or finance and relevant certifications like CPA or CIA. Familiarity with audit software, data analytics tools, and secure file-sharing platforms is typically required. Exceptional communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating with clients and teams from a distance. These abilities ensure thorough, accurate audits and effective remote collaboration, which are essential for maintaining compliance and trust in a decentralized work environment.

How does a remote auditor typically collaborate with on-site teams and clients during an audit process?

Remote Auditors frequently communicate with on-site teams and clients using video conferencing, secure document-sharing platforms, and collaborative project management tools. They coordinate audit schedules, request supporting documentation, and clarify findings through regular virtual meetings and emails. Although working remotely reduces travel, it requires strong organizational and communication skills to ensure all parties stay aligned and deadlines are met. Building trust and rapport with clients remotely is essential for accessing information efficiently and conducting thorough audits.

About this Position
At Texas Mutual, we are proud to create a stronger, safer Texas. That means helping injured workers return to a productive life, empowering businesses to thrive, and giving back to our communities. The Premium Audit team plays a major role in these efforts by determining the final premium for our policyholders at the conclusion of each policy term.

  • Analyze the policyholder's financial reconciliations to ensure they match
  • Compare the policyholder's payroll records with the estimated or actual payroll reported
  • Determine the appropriate job classification codes for the policyholder's employees by reviewing the workforce and interviewing the policyholder
  • Reconcile the appropriate job classification code with the code reported and adjusting premium accordingly
  • Determine scope of operations by reviewing contracts between the policyholder and other entities and applying IRS revenue rulings and workers' compensation statutes and rules to determine whether a true independent contractor relationship exists versus common law employee status
  • Apply the Texas Basic Manual Rules, Classifications and Rates for Workers' Compensation to the information obtained from the audit to determine the proper premium basis

Provide professional and technical explanations to policyholders and agents concerning proper classifications as to the policyholder's operations, to include:
  • Communicating information in a highly professional manner both verbally and in writing policyholders, agents and other customers (both internal and external)
  • Recommending proper accounting procedures to policyholders
  • Identifying potential premium fraud by policyholders and forwards fraud referrals to the Special Investigations Department
  • Contributing to the effectiveness of Underwriting and Safety Services by conveying physical, financial and other pertinent information gained or determined by analysis of the policyholder's operations and financial structure

In the Senior role, you can also expect to:
  • Provide advanced premium audit expertise to staff, management, policyholders, and agents, by:
    • Training staff, policyholders, and agents on auditing as requested.
    • Serving as a subject matter expert on projects and process discussions.
    • Recommending and documenting premium audit procedures.
    • Assisting management in coordinating departmental workflow, staff, and resources.
    • Consulting on complex premium audit matters.

The successful candidate must have:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education, training and experience.
  • At least two years' premium audit experience or equivalent education, training and experience for non-senior role and at least four years of premium audit experience for senior role.
  • Knowledge of underwriting principles and procedures, the NCCI Basic Manual of rules and Texas labor codes.
  • Valid Texas driver's license.

It would be great to have:
  • CPCU or Associate in Premium Audit designation
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish
