Job description

WHO WE ARE

Consumer Reports is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to a fair and just marketplace for all. CR is known for our rigorous testing and trusted ratings on thousands of products and services.  We report extensively on consumer trends and challenges, and survey millions of people in the U.S. each year. We leverage our evidence-based approach to advocate for consumer rights, working with policymakers and companies to find solutions for safer products and fair practices.

Our mission starts with you. We offer medical benefits that start on your first day as a CR employee that include behavioral health coverage, family planning and a generous 401K match. Learn more about how CR advocates on behalf of our employees.

OVERVIEW

CR's Data Visualization Designers create data-driven visual stories that make complex product testing results, safety investigations, and consumer reporting accessible and actionable.  As a Senior Designer on the team, you will  translate complex datasets—including product performance testing, safety investigations, recalls, regulatory actions, market trends, and consumer research—into accessible charts, graphics, interactive experiences, and explanatory visuals that help consumers understand risks, compare products, and make confident decisions.

The Senior Designer, Data Visualization reports to the Associate Director, Brand Design and works collaboratively with our journalists, researchers, and testing experts to create visualizations, infographics, graphs, charts and  other design elements that make CR's content more engaging and insightful. In this position you will get to pitch concepts and explore new and tested visual techniques.

We're looking for a designer that has the ability to design with the audience in mind, creating infographics that are intuitive and accessible, even to those unfamiliar with the topic. If you are interested in a position that demands a strong balance between technical knowledge and creative design skill, we're looking forward to reviewing your resume and digital portfolio.

This is a remote position.  It is not eligible for sponsorship or relocation assistance.

How You'll Make An Impact

The stories you will work on will champion consumers' interests and change people's lives. Specifically you will:

  • Create visual designs such as charts, graphs, and interactives, for digital products, ensuring alignment with the overall UX strategy and user needs.
  • Partner with the content team to understand upcoming stories and develop design approaches to enhance coverage. Pitch concepts aligned with brand voice and tone.
  • Analyze, synthesize and interpret data to be translated into visual designs that facilitate the reader's understanding and experience.
  • Use design, imagery, and data to deliver compelling visual storytelling—which helps users better understand key story points, and creates a richer user experience.
  • Explore visual ways of telling stories by using a variety of techniques and approaches to create compelling narratives through design, such as audience interaction, layout, and structure.
  • Design data visualizations and information graphics that include high-fidelity visual designs, typography, color schemes, iconography, and layout, ensuring brand consistency across all platforms.
  • Prototype and develop interactives in HTML, CSS and JS.
  • Implement interactive graphics in the content management system.
  • Optimize presentation across platforms by ensuring that visual and interactive elements provide a consistent, engaging experience tailored to each platform's unique characteristics.
  • Update and refresh graphics when necessary.
  • Stay informed about competitors and industry trends.
  • May perform other duties as required.

ABOUT YOU

You'll Be Highly Rated If:

  • You have a degree.  You'll need a BS in design, computer science or a related discipline.
  • You have the experience.  We're looking for someone with at least 7-years of professional design experience for an information-driven digital publication.
  • You can code. Our team relies on your ability to translate accessible designs into code which displays well on desktop and mobile environments.
  • You have a portfolio that demonstrates strong visual and graphic design skills, including data visualization and information graphics.
  • You understand basic data analysis so that you can interpret raw data, extract key insights, and identify trends for visualization and can distill complex information into essential points.
  • You are knowledgeable in design fundamentals and storytelling techniques, including color theory, typography, composition, and layout, to create visuals that are both attractive and easily understood and flow visually to guide the viewer's understanding.
  • You know the tools needed including d3 and JavaScript libraries, as well as SVG animation, interactivity design and programming, data acquisition, data cleaning and analysis, use of python or R, and chart design.
  • You are a skilled collaborator and communicator.  You partner well with cross-functional colleagues to convey the intended message.
  • You are adaptable to feedback and can incorporate new information or changing project needs while maintaining quality visuals that meet brand guidelines, consistent style and tone.

You'll Be One of Our Top Picks If:

  • You've designed for a consumer-focused organization.
