Job description

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 & representing over 110,000 veterinarians working in private & corporate practice, government, industry, academia, & uniformed services, is seeking an Assistant Director to join our Education & Research Division. Structured to work for its members, AVMA acts as a collective voice for its membership & for the profession. Our mission is to lead the profession by advocating for our members & advancing the science & practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal & human health.
Reporting to the Chief of Academic Affairs, Research & Accreditation, the Assistant Director will perform functions to assist the Chief Officer to propose, develop & implement AVMA policies & programs concerning veterinary research, veterinary specialty board certification, specialists in academia, specialists in practice & industry, & the AVMA Veterinary Clinical Trials Registry. They will work closely with AVMA governance entities in the execution of duties.
The Assistant Director will provide primary professional staff support for the Council on Research (COR), the American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS), & the Veterinary Specialty Organizations Committee (VSOC), & other governance entities as needed; they will also serve as the principal administrator of the AVMA Veterinary Clinical Trials Registry (VCT). This position may work remotely. Less than 25% travel.
To be successful in this role, you must be highly collaborative & passionate about AVMA's mission & increasing member satisfaction & engagement. Additional qualifications include:
  • DVM/VMD is required; PhD &/or board certification in an AVMA-Recognized Veterinary Specialty Organization preferred
  • Minimum of three years' work experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of veterinary research
  • Preferred knowledge of or experience in veterinary education
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about issues affecting veterinary specialty board certification
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills (written & verbal) are required with the ability to synthesize information & summarize clearly, logically & persuasively
  • Must be a critical thinker & problem solver
  • Must interact & effectively communicate with members of the scientific & the non-scientific community; & the AVMA leadership & membership
  • Must possess the ability to manage multiple projects & meetings simultaneously
  • Must be able to organize, plan & manage group meetings
  • Basic computer skills are required, including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams & data management via OneDrive
  • Must be an AVMA member in good standing
