Can you do drafting remotely?

Remote architectural drafting is common in the industry, allowing drafters to work from home or other locations using CAD software and cloud-based collaboration tools. Successful remote work requires strong communication skills, reliable internet, and proficiency with drafting programs like AutoCAD or Revit.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Architectural Drafting position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Remote Architectural Drafting, you need strong drafting and design skills, proficiency in interpreting architectural plans, and often an associate degree or technical certification in drafting or a related field. Expertise in CAD software such as AutoCAD or Revit is typically essential, and experience with file-sharing platforms or BIM systems is highly valued. Attention to detail, self-motivation, and clear communication skills are crucial for collaborating with architects and project teams while working independently. These skills ensure accuracy, timely project delivery, and effective remote collaboration with other professionals in the architecture and construction sectors.

What is a Remote Architectural Drafting job?

A Remote Architectural Drafting job involves creating technical drawings and blueprints for architectural projects using CAD software while working from a remote location. Drafters translate architects' concepts into precise plans that detail measurements, materials, and construction methods. This role often requires proficiency in drafting software like AutoCAD or Revit, strong attention to detail, and knowledge of building codes. Remote drafters collaborate with architects, engineers, and clients through digital communication tools. It offers flexibility but requires self-discipline and strong organizational skills.

Are architectural drafters in demand?

Architectural drafters are in steady demand as they play a key role in creating detailed technical drawings for construction projects. The need for skilled drafters is expected to grow with ongoing construction and renovation activities, especially for those proficient in CAD software and building codes.

Will CAD drafters be replaced by AI?

CAD drafters in architectural drafting perform detailed design and technical drawings that require creativity and understanding of building codes, which AI currently cannot fully replicate. While AI tools can assist with automating repetitive tasks and improving efficiency, human expertise remains essential for complex design decisions and quality control.

What does a typical workday look like for someone in a Remote Architectural Drafting position?

A typical workday for a Remote Architectural Drafter involves creating, revising, and finalizing technical drawings and blueprints based on project specifications provided by architects or engineers. You'll often attend virtual meetings or reviews to discuss project requirements and resolve design challenges, and you may coordinate with team members across different time zones. Managing multiple tasks, such as updating plans, sending files for approval, and responding to feedback, is common. Strong communication and time management skills are essential in this largely independent work setting, making it important to stay organized and proactive to meet deadlines and maintain project quality.

How to make $80,000 a year working from home?

Remote architectural drafting professionals can earn $80,000 or more annually by gaining advanced skills in CAD software, building a strong portfolio, and securing high-paying clients or employment with firms that value remote work. Consistent work, specialization in complex projects, and certifications can also increase earning potential while working from home.

Job description

SAIC is seeking an Electrical Engineer or ECAD Draftsman with strong experience in cable harness, test rack integration, and Technical Data Package (TDP) maturation for next-generation Hypersonic Missile System Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) test racks. This position provides direct engineering support to Hypersonics HWIL Laboratories, focusing on electrical design updates, technical data package refinement, and the integration of high-fidelity test equipment into the Hypersonic program.
The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and highly skilled in 2D electrical drafting, cable/harness documentation, and Zuken e3.Series workflows, including DS-E3 PDM. This role requires frequent engagement with geographically dispersed engineering teams as well as external partners delivering subsystem and test equipment updates.
NOTE: This is a position that is 100% remote/work from home.
Key Responsibilities
  • Mature and expand a Technical Data Package (TDP) from prototype-level drawings to MIL-STD-31000 production-ready documentation supporting Hypersonic Missile System HWIL operations.
  • Update and maintain 2D electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cable/harness drawings, and interconnect documentation for HWIL chassis and associated lab equipment.
  • Review and interpret Hypersonic Weapon System HWIL electrical architecture, cabling requirements, and chassis-level integration details to ensure alignment with evolving system designs.
  • Strategize and execute intelligent drawing integration into Zuken DS-E3 (centralized Product Data Management), ensuring version control, traceability, and cross-functional usability is maintained among a geographically distributed team.
  • Collaborate with multi-site engineering teams, suppliers, and government stakeholders to incorporate product updates and maintain configuration consistency across distributed environments.
  • Conduct design reviews of HWIL chassis equipment, test assets, and interface control artifacts to ensure compliance with electrical design standards and system requirements.
  • Ensure all documentation meets DoD drawing standards, program standards, export control constraints, and DoD security requirements.

Qualifications
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Electronics Technology, Drafting/Design, or related discipline.
  • Experience maturing a Technical Data Package (TDP) from prototype to production quality.
  • Demonstrated expertise updating 2D electrical schematics, electrical rack/chassis layouts, and cable/harness drawings.
  • Experience working with weapons-related or high-complexity system cabling (Hypersonic, missile, aerospace, or similar).
  • Proficiency with Zuken e3.Series products; experience with DS-E3 PDM and drawing management.
  • Ability to collaborate with geographically distributed teams and external organizations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance (active clearance preferred).

DESIRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Understanding of DoD engineering processes, configuration management, and quality assurance for production-ready documentation.
  • Experience with workflow automation or advanced features within Zuken's e3.Series products and PDM environment.
