What is a remote architect?

A remote architect is a licensed professional who designs buildings and oversees construction projects while working from a location outside the traditional office environment. Using digital tools and communication platforms, remote architects collaborate with clients, engineers, and contractors to develop plans, create 3D models, and manage project progress. This role often requires strong self-motivation, excellent communication skills, and proficiency with architectural software. Remote architects can work for firms or as independent consultants, serving clients from anywhere in the world. The flexibility of remote work allows architects to balance multiple projects and adapt to client needs efficiently.

What does a remote architect do?

As a remote architect, you work from home and design architecture to the specifications of your client. In this role, you may use virtual office software to coordinate with other members of your firm, modify existing designs, and participate in meetings to ensure all architectural designs meet the needs of each client. Despite the remote nature of this job, many remote architects travel at least some of the time to visit build sites, oversee construction, or participate in meetings. This job title refers exclusively to the structural design form of architecture and should not be confused with remote software or data architecture jobs, which are completely different but may appear in your search results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Architect, you need a professional degree in architecture, strong design and technical drawing skills, and relevant licensure such as an NCARB certification. Proficiency in tools like AutoCAD, Revit, BIM software, and virtual collaboration platforms is essential. Exceptional communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for remote coordination and client engagement. These skills ensure high-quality project delivery, effective teamwork, and successful client outcomes in a distributed work environment.

How do remote architects effectively collaborate with clients and project teams across different locations?

Remote architects utilize a range of digital tools, such as BIM software, cloud-based project management platforms, and video conferencing, to communicate design concepts and coordinate with clients, engineers, and contractors. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation practices help ensure that everyone is aligned throughout the project lifecycle. While working remotely can present challenges like time zone differences or limited in-person site visits, successful remote architects develop strong communication skills and adapt workflows to maintain project quality and client satisfaction.

Can you work remotely as a remote architect?

Yes, many remote architects work from home or other locations, utilizing design software and communication tools to collaborate with clients and teams. Remote work in architecture often requires strong technical skills, a reliable internet connection, and familiarity with project management platforms. However, some projects or firms may require on-site visits or meetings depending on the scope of work.

Is a remote architect still in demand?

Remote architects are still in demand as organizations seek flexible work arrangements and specialized design expertise. Success in this role often requires strong technical skills, proficiency with design software, and effective communication tools. The demand varies by industry and project complexity but remains steady due to ongoing infrastructure and development needs.

With over 30,000 employees across Asia, the Americas, Africa, and Europe, we offer a dynamic environment to develop and perfect your skills in a field filled with exciting challenges and opportunities.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Architecture and Technical Director (ATD) to join our Contract Business Unit for one (or more) strategic global customers.

In this role, you will be the overall owner of the customer technical architecture across all Orange services and solutions-post-sales and for organic growth pre-sales. You will lead the Architecture & Technology Office, set the technical strategy and roadmap, and ensure that every solution we design is implementable, operable, secure, and financially optimized.

You will act as the trusted technology advisor for the customer, working closely with CxO-level stakeholders, the Contract Business Unit Head, Solution Leads, and our internal and external partners to translate business strategy into a robust, scalable, and innovative architecture.

If you are passionate about complex enterprise architectures, leading high-performing technical teams, and driving innovation and automation in a global, multicultural environment, we encourage you to apply.

Objectives of the role

  • Be the trusted technology advisor and global lead architect for a major customer account.
  • Own the end-to-end technical architecture of all Orange-delivered services across the full lifecycle of the contract.
  • Lead the Architecture & Technology Office, providing direction, coaching, and coordination for architecture and design resources.
  • Govern and sign off all new technical solutions and major changes, ensuring they are implementable, operable, secure, and aligned with standards.
  • Shape and maintain the technical roadmap jointly with the customer, aligned with their business strategy and Orange Business objectives (revenue, margin, satisfaction).
  • Support organic growth by managing a structured pre-sales governance for incremental opportunities within the existing contract.
  • Ensure architecture coherence and design consistency across all domains (data, security, voice, collaboration, cloud, data center, applications, etc.).
  • Drive innovation, automation, and AI-based services, testing them in lab environments and co-creating with the customer.
  • Ensure effective knowledge management and documentation, including design repositories and architecture standards.
  • Contribute to the CBU P&L, financially optimizing solutions and ensuring delivery according to or better than the business case.

What you will do

1. Customer leadership & architecture governance

  • Act as the global lead architect for the account, representing Orange in the joint technology board and other senior technical forums.
  • Regularly meet with customer executives and technical leaders (on-site, remote, and at industry events) to understand their business, IT strategy, and transformation priorities.
  • Design and maintain a detailed customer journey and enterprise architecture that connects business capabilities, processes, and technology building blocks.
  • Identify and document customer use cases and related service profile structures to guide solution design and industrialization.
  • Own the governance process on technology and service architecture, including architecture review boards, innovation boards, and change advisory governance.
  • Serve as the client technical advocate, ensuring that Orange solutions meet or exceed agreed expectations while preserving Orange's business objectives.

2. Solution design, lifecycle & operations

  • Lead and validate high-level and low-level designs (HLD/LLD) across network, security, collaboration, cloud, and associated ecosystems.
  • Ensure that all solutions are implementable and operable by Orange operations teams, including clear operational models and handover criteria.
  • Support Order-to-Bill and onboarding processes with the right architecture and design inputs.
  • Oversee design documentation, including architecture repositories, templates, naming conventions, and configuration baselines, ensuring history is traceable ("why things were done that way").
  • Guarantee technical design consistency over the lifecycle of the contract and across all projects and changes.
  • Manage and validate complex technical changes, ensuring impact on architecture, security, and operations is fully assessed and controlled.
  • Perform and coordinate handover to operations at the end of pilots and transition phases.
  • Organize and lead regular technical audits, contributing to the continuous service/solution improvement plan.

3. Technical leadership & ecosystem management

  • Lead the Architecture & Technology Office, organizing and prioritizing the work of architects, designers, and subject-matter experts assigned to the customer.
  • Liaise closely with Project Managers, Account / CBU Directors, Operations Managers, and other Orange teams to ensure alignment and smooth delivery.
  • Coordinate with hardware and software vendors, Orange Engineering, Product Management, and partner organizations to integrate best-of-breed technologies.
  • Provide technical escalation leadership during major incidents and crises, supporting root-cause analysis, remediation, and stakeholder communication.
  • Host regular technical cadence calls with the customer's technical leaders and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure information security governance across delivered services (compliance, security policies, risk management, and remediation plans).

4. Strategy, innovation, automation & AI

  • Jointly build a multi-year technology roadmap with the customer that addresses their future business needs and aligns with Orange's portfolio evolution.
  • Proactively promote innovations (network, cloud, security, collaboration, digital services, automation, and AI) that deliver measurable business value.
  • Work with solution partners and digital / business consulting teams to define digital use cases, proofs-of-concept, and pilots, from customer journey to business case.
  • Test innovative solutions in lab or pilot environments, gather customer feedback, and guide industrialization when relevant.
  • Identify opportunities for automation, orchestration, and AI-based services to improve quality, agility, and cost efficiency.

5. Financials, reporting & stakeholder communication

  • Contribute to business case definition and validation, including cost modeling, risk assessment, and margin optimization for technical solutions.
  • Own the consulting and architecture effort estimation and sign-off, in line with consulting governance.
  • Present recent achievements, roadmaps, risks, and hot topics during Monthly or Quarterly Business Reviews (MBR/QBR) with the customer and internal leadership.
  • Support the account strategy by identifying growth opportunities, influencing deal shaping, and positioning Orange as vendor and partner of choice.
