What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Architect, you need a professional degree in architecture, strong design and technical drawing skills, and relevant licensure such as an NCARB certification. Proficiency in tools like AutoCAD, Revit, BIM software, and virtual collaboration platforms is essential. Exceptional communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for remote coordination and client engagement. These skills ensure high-quality project delivery, effective teamwork, and successful client outcomes in a distributed work environment.

How do remote architects effectively collaborate with clients and project teams across different locations?

Remote architects utilize a range of digital tools, such as BIM software, cloud-based project management platforms, and video conferencing, to communicate design concepts and coordinate with clients, engineers, and contractors. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation practices help ensure that everyone is aligned throughout the project lifecycle. While working remotely can present challenges like time zone differences or limited in-person site visits, successful remote architects develop strong communication skills and adapt workflows to maintain project quality and client satisfaction.

What is a remote architect?

A remote architect is a licensed professional who designs buildings and oversees construction projects while working from a location outside the traditional office environment. Using digital tools and communication platforms, remote architects collaborate with clients, engineers, and contractors to develop plans, create 3D models, and manage project progress. This role often requires strong self-motivation, excellent communication skills, and proficiency with architectural software. Remote architects can work for firms or as independent consultants, serving clients from anywhere in the world. The flexibility of remote work allows architects to balance multiple projects and adapt to client needs efficiently.

What does a remote architect do?

As a remote architect, you work from home and design architecture to the specifications of your client. In this role, you may use virtual office software to coordinate with other members of your firm, modify existing designs, and participate in meetings to ensure all architectural designs meet the needs of each client. Despite the remote nature of this job, many remote architects travel at least some of the time to visit build sites, oversee construction, or participate in meetings. This job title refers exclusively to the structural design form of architecture and should not be confused with remote software or data architecture jobs, which are completely different but may appear in your search results.

This posting is for an existing vacancy.
As an Architect you will define and maintain the technical vision while staying deeply hands-on - writing
production-ready code alongside your teams across several of our SaaS products. This role is approximately 50-75% hands-on development and 25-50% strategic leadership, architecture, and mentoring.
What You Will do
Hands-On Development (50-75% of the role)
  • Write production-ready code alongside your teams - this is a hands-on role, not a purely advisory one
  • Design and implement complex features, services, and platform capabilities in C#/.NET
  • Conduct architecture and code reviews across multiple product teams (e.g., Onboard, eForms, Attract, Insight), ensuring design consistency and quality
  • Maintain code quality standards using static analysis and security scanning tools (e.g., SonarQube, Mend); champion clean code practices and drive remediation of findings
  • Build, optimize, and maintain CI/CD pipelines; drive containerization efforts using Docker and Kubernetes
  • Diagnose and resolve critical production issues related to architecture or design flaws, performing root cause analysis and driving long-term fixes (e.g., application pool crashes, connection pooling issues, database deadlocks)
  • Champion observability and monitoring practices across teams, including integration of telemetry and performance monitoring tools
Architectural Leadership & Strategy (25-50% of the role)
  • Own, define, and maintain the overall vision and strategic direction for architecture within the NEOGOV suite of products Research emerging technologies and industry practices; build and present a technical roadmap with concrete modernization milestones (e.g., framework upgrades, architecture transitions)
  • Ensure the SaaS platform is optimized for performance and scalability, addressing bottlenecks and ensuring the system can handle growth in users and data
  • Design and implement architectures and technologies with security at the forefront, ensuring compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and standards such as FedRAMP
  • Collaborate with engineering leads across teams to resolve cross-team technical dependencies and break down organizational silos around system interoperability
  • Mentor and guide architects and senior developers, promoting a culture of excellence and continuous improvement
  • Lead and champion Agile engineering practices across teams, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, and iterative delivery

Who You Are
Technical Skills
  • Proven ability to personally design and implement complex features in production - not just oversee them
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and optimize large-scale distributed systems with a focus on scalability, reliability, reusability, and performance
  • Advanced expertise in modern Angular (v18+) and TypeScript; proficiency in state management and performance optimization for large-scale Single Page Applications (SPAs).
  • Experience developing, deploying, and maintaining large-scale enterprise SaaS applications serving thousands of concurrent users
  • Experience designing and building platform services, APIs, and processes that can be seamlessly integrated and leveraged by multiple product delivery teams; ability to drive adoption of services and best practices across business units
  • Expertise in CI/CD pipeline design and optimization, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and DevOps tooling and practices
  • Familiarity with code quality and security scanning tools (e.g., SonarQube, Mend) and observability/monitoring platforms
  • Deep hands-on experience with at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Azure, or GCP), including architecting resilient, serverless, and cloud-native microservice solutions (Required)
  • Expertise in latest security practices, including identifying potential security risks in platform services, communicating them, and implementing robust mitigation strategies
  • Expertise in Identity and Access Management (IAM) frameworks and protocols including OIDC and SAML; ability to architect and implement secure, scalable IAM solutions that ensure proper authentication, authorization, and auditing across multiple systems and applications

Leadership & Communication
  • Strong leadership skills in fostering collaboration, driving Agile practices, and managing project timelines
  • Exceptional ability to articulate complex architectural concepts to a diverse audience, ranging from executive leadership and business units to technical teams
  • Proficiency in creating clear and impactful presentations and documentation to support architectural decisions
  • Skilled in engaging with and influencing stakeholders at all levels, ensuring alignment of architectural strategies with business objectives and facilitating buy-in from all parties involved
  • Ability to connect architectural decisions to business outcomes; experience working directly with product and business stakeholders to align technical strategy with organizational goals

What You Have
  • 8+ years of progressive software development experience using C#, .NET Core, SQL, and modern Angular (v18+) with TypeScript
  • 3+ years of experience as a Software Architect or equivalent technical leadership role in a SaaS company
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) - Required
  • Experience with CI/CD tools, containerization, and DevOps practices
  • Experience engaging with, and presenting to, technical stakeholders and executive leaders
  • Bachelor's in Computer Science, related field, or equivalent work experience

What NEOGOV Offers
  • Competitive Wages
  • Comprehensive Benefits package (medical, dental, vision, etc.)
  • Generous PTO to support work-life balance
  • 401K/RRSP Matching
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Autonomy to grow and find your career path with supportive leadership
  • Remote working opportunities
  • Inclusive and diverse work environment
