What does a Remote Architect in Construction Administration do?

A Remote Architect in Construction Administration oversees the construction phase of building projects from a remote location. They review construction documents, answer Requests for Information (RFIs), evaluate submittals, and ensure that the project is built according to design specifications and code requirements. These professionals coordinate with contractors, clients, and project teams via digital tools and virtual meetings to resolve issues and maintain project quality. Their role is vital to ensuring the integrity of the design while addressing challenges that arise during construction, all while working offsite.

Remote Architect Construction Administration primarily involves overseeing construction projects, ensuring compliance, and conducting site visits. In contrast, Remote Architect Project Management emphasizes planning, scheduling, and coordinating architectural projects from start to finish. Both roles require architectural credentials but differ in daily tasks and work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Architect in Construction Administration, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Architect in Construction Administration, you need a strong background in architectural principles, construction processes, and a degree in architecture, often supported by licensure (e.g., RA or AIA). Proficiency with tools like Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and project management platforms (such as Procore) is essential, along with familiarity with building codes and documentation standards. Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills help you coordinate with contractors, resolve site issues, and manage multiple projects remotely. These skills ensure construction projects meet design intent, quality standards, and timelines while maintaining effective collaboration from a distance.

How does a Remote Architect in Construction Administration effectively collaborate with on-site teams and manage project oversight from a distance?

A Remote Architect in Construction Administration typically leverages digital tools such as video conferencing, project management software, and cloud-based document sharing to stay closely connected with on-site teams. Regular virtual meetings, frequent progress check-ins, and real-time issue tracking are essential for maintaining clear communication and ensuring that construction adheres to design intent. While physical site visits may be less frequent, remote architects often rely on detailed photographic documentation, drone footage, and as-built drawings provided by on-site personnel. This collaborative approach allows remote architects to address challenges promptly, uphold quality standards, and ensure project timelines are met, despite not being physically present on the construction site.

Job description

ABOUT MKTHINK
MKThink is a future-forward design firm grounded in spatial intelligence and dedicated to "build less, solve more." Our data-informed solutions improve human performance at less operational, environmental, and capital costs than conventional approaches. Founded in 2000, MKThink practices from the Pacific Edge of San Francisco to the Oceanic Edge of O'ahu. At MKThink, we believe that we can play a role in helping create a better and more sustainable future by creating intelligent spaces that improve the quality of life. Our greatest resource is our staff and their ability to contribute fully as teammates and individuals. We bring together thinkers from various disciplines to solve problems at the nexus of architecture, culture, and the environment. Our people have the interdisciplinary skills to contribute to this mission within and across the domains of architecture, strategies, and innovation.
THE ROLE
MKThink is seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled Senior Associate (Job Captain) to support the development and delivery of architectural projects across a diverse range of sectors, including commercial, civic, education, healthcare, multi-family residential, and mixed-use developments. This position requires strong technical proficiency in construction documentation, consultant coordination, BIM/Revit workflows, and construction administration support, as well as the ability to mentor and guide junior staff.
The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable managing multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment. Experience working with California, Hawaii, and Pacific Island jurisdictions, public agencies, DSA and/or HCAI processes, and multidisciplinary consultant teams is highly valued.

Team Collaboration & Mentorship
  • Collaborate with and support junior architectural staff and emerging professionals.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive studio environment focused on growth, accountability, and continuous improvement.
