What is remote apparel design?

A Remote Apparel Design job involves creating clothing and accessories while working from a remote location rather than a traditional office or studio. Designers use digital tools to sketch concepts, develop patterns, and collaborate with teams online. Responsibilities may include trend research, fabric selection, and communicating with manufacturers. This role requires creativity, strong design software skills, and the ability to work independently while coordinating with remote teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote apparel design?

To thrive in Remote Apparel Design, you need strong creative skills in fashion illustration, pattern making, and garment construction, often supported by a degree in fashion design or a related field. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (especially Illustrator and Photoshop), 3D design software, and experience with digital collaboration tools are typically required. Strong communication, time management, and the ability to work independently make candidates stand out in this remote position. These abilities ensure that designs meet client specifications, deadlines are managed efficiently, and remote collaboration is smooth and effective.

What are some unique challenges faced by remote apparel designers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote apparel designers often face challenges related to communication, feedback, and coordination with production teams, as they typically do not have in-person access to physical samples or colleagues. To address these challenges, designers rely heavily on detailed digital presentations, clear documentation, and frequent virtual check-ins with team members to ensure their vision is accurately translated into finished products. Effective use of digital tools and proactive communication help bridge the distance, while strong organizational skills help designers manage multiple projects and tight deadlines. Many companies also provide access to virtual sample review platforms and foster a supportive team culture to make remote collaboration smoother. By staying adaptable and embracing the latest design technologies, remote apparel designers can overcome these challenges and thrive in the industry.

Job description

Why Great Gray?
At Great Gray Group, we strive to set the bar for the retirement services industry. Our goal is to deliver advanced retirement solutions that combine our core fiduciary services with robust investment options, innovative technology, and dedicated client service. We focus on making choices clearer, transitions smoother, and the client experience more delightful. Complacency isn't in our vocabulary. Every day, we look for opportunities to better serve our clients, be an excellent business partner, and earn the trust of those who rely on us.

The Role

Great Gray is looking to add a Senior UX Designer to drive experience quality across our retirement investment platform. This role sits at the center of a channel-aligned product organization, translating complex workflows into experiences that are clear, efficient, and built around how advisors, recordkeepers, and asset managers work.

The Senior UX Designer will shape how we frame problems, lead user research that grounds product decisions in real behavior, and set the standards that make the design practice faster and more consistent over time. The person who thrives here brings sharp research instincts, strong opinions about what excellent UX looks like in a data-intensive B2B environment, and the communication skills and executive presence to bring stakeholders and customers along.

Location

This position will work from our Boston, MA office. Great Gray currently supports a hybrid work model with 4 days onsite, and 1 day remote.

Visa sponsorship or transfer of an existing visa is not available for this position. Applicants must be authorized to work directly for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship or transfer.

Responsibilities

  • Design and prototype across the full UX process - information architectures, user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity interactive prototypes for testing and stakeholder alignment
  • Lead user research for your initiatives - conducting interviews, usability testing, and surveys to build deep understanding of advisor, recordkeeper, and asset manager personas, their workflows, pain points, and behaviors
  • Partner with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to define requirements, iterate on solutions, and ship high-impact work
  • Present research findings and design decisions to stakeholders at all levels, connecting user needs to business outcomes
  • Work closely with engineering through detailed specs and ongoing support to maintain design quality through production
  • Collaborate with fellow designers to raise the bar on craft and establish design patterns, UI components, and accessibility standards that ensure consistency and scale across the platform
  • Complete other related duties as assigned

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in design or related field (Master's degree a plus)
  • 7+ years of professional UX/UI design experience in a B2B SaaS environment

  • Proven track record of leading research end-to-end - not just running sessions, but translating findings into product decisions that changed what got built
  • Strong collaboration skills with product managers and engineers in an agile environment to ship user-centered solutions
  • Proficiency in Figma and other industry-standard design tools
  • Experience building or meaningfully contributing to a design system in a scaling product environment
  • Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, low-process environment where you'll often be building the framework while using it
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity
  • Entrepreneurial mindset to bring best practice ideas to the team

Company Background
Great Gray is the leading independent provider of trustee and administrative services to Collective Investment Trusts ("CITs"), with over $370 billion in CIT assets under management, across more than 1,020 funds. We proudly work with more than 80 subadvisors, including leading firms such as AllianceBernstein, American Funds, BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, MetLife, Neuberger Berman, PGIM, PIMCO and Raymond James.

CITs are more than just an investment vehicle. They represent a forward-thinking approach to retirement planning. CITs have a history dating back over 90 years; but they have gained favor over the past decade, driven by innovations, and Great Gray has been at the forefront.

Great Gray has consistently delivered year-over-year growth at an above market rate and is investing in the continued development of its core CIT business as well as complementary administrative services and technology solutions for the retirement market.

Madison Dearborn Partners ("MDP") purchased Great Gray from Wilmington Trust in April 2023. As a result, Great Gray is an independent company owned by funds affiliated with MDP.
