What is a remote accountant?

A remote accountant is a financial professional who performs accounting tasks such as bookkeeping, preparing financial statements, handling payroll, and managing taxes while working from a location outside of a traditional office. They use cloud-based accounting software and secure communication tools to collaborate with clients and team members. Remote accountants offer flexibility and can serve clients from anywhere, making them a popular choice for businesses seeking expert financial services without the need for on-site staff.

What does a remote accountant do?

As a remote accountant, you work via the internet as part of an accounting firm or in a freelance capacity, providing services like accounts receivable or accounts payable management to businesses. Your duties include reviewing finance and tax forms, reviewing invoices, and performing data entry and tax services. Some work from home accountants are also studying for CPA exams while they work as a remote accountant. There is an increasing number of virtual accounting services, so there are many opportunities for you to work as a remote accountant.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote accountant?

To thrive as a Remote Accountant, you need a strong background in accounting principles, financial reporting, and an accredited degree such as a bachelor's in accounting or finance, often paired with certifications like CPA. Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, or SAP) and secure cloud-based collaboration tools is typically required. Excellent organization, self-motivation, and clear written communication are vital soft skills for managing tasks independently and staying connected with clients or team members remotely. These skills ensure accurate financial management, regulatory compliance, and seamless virtual collaboration in a remote work environment.

How does a remote accountant typically collaborate with clients and team members while working offsite?

As a Remote Accountant, communication and collaboration are primarily conducted through digital means such as email, video conferencing, and cloud-based accounting software. You'll regularly coordinate with clients to gather financial documents and clarify transactions, while also participating in virtual team meetings to ensure alignment on project goals and deadlines. It's common to use project management tools and secure file-sharing platforms to streamline workflows. Building strong communication habits and being proactive in updates are essential for maintaining productivity and trust when working remotely.

The Contribution You'll bring to this Role:
This role is built for an early-career accounting professional who wants real ownership, broad business exposure, and a clear path to grow. You will work directly with the Business Unit Controller, partner with finance and sales teams, and build hands-on experience in close, rebates, intercompany, and operational accounting.
About the Team:
As a member of our Finance team, you'll be working with professionals dedicated to excellence and innovation. At Justrite Safety Group, you'll work alongside some of the best in the industry, collaborating on impactful projects that drive business success. Our team values precision, strategic thinking, and a passion for delivering results. Together, we create a supportive and challenging environment where you can grow your skills and make meaningful contributions to the company's financial strength and strategic goals.
What You'll Do at Justrite:
  • Own reconciliations and monthly activity for assigned accounts, including prepaids, commissions, and rebate reserves.
  • Prepare recurring journal entries and month-end accruals.
  • Administer distributor rebate programs and review customer deductions and claims for contract compliance.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for intercompany transactions with trading partners.
  • Partner with non-finance stakeholders to determine the correct accounting treatment for sales deductions and expenses.
  • Support year-end audit requests by preparing schedules, documentation, and account support for assigned areas.
  • Compile information needed for state and local sales tax filings across monthly, quarterly, semiannual, and annual cycles.
  • Help maintain strong internal controls by following and reinforcing company policies and procedures.

Your Skills and Expertise:
To ensure your success from day one in this role, Justrite requires the following qualifications at a minimum:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • 3-5 years of accounting experience, ideally in a manufacturing, distribution, or product-based environment.
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles, reconciliations, accruals, and financial controls.
  • Comfort working in ERP and financial systems; experience with OneStream and Infor is a plus.

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
  • Experience with systems such as XA, BaaN, Syteline, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Epicor, SAP, or similar platforms.
  • Exposure to rebates, sales deductions, intercompany transactions, or sales tax support.
  • A continuous improvement mindset and interest in making processes more efficient.
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to work cross-functionally with non-finance partners.

Location:
This position can be located onsite in Broomfield, CO or fully remote if located in MST or PST.
Compensation:
The position offers a competitive base salary ranging from $50,000 to $75,000.
Actual base salaries will vary and may be above or below the recommended pay range based on factors such as but not limited to location, relevant experience and performance.
