JOB TITLE: Furnace Operator

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

DIVISION/DEPARTMENT: Great Lakes / Melt

DATE DEVELOPED: 01/2023

REPORTS TO: Melt Supervisor

POSITION SCOPE

Furnace Operators performs duties in connection with the remelting of metal for the die cast operation. This includes setting up, operating, loading, unloading, and monitoring of furnaces. Operator ensures compliance of furnace cycles by adjusting controls to maintain specified temperatures in furnaces per work instructions. This position requires high attention to safety for the handling of molten metal and high temperatures. Operators are required to operate forklifts to transport material used in or a product from furnace operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Fills remelt furnace at required weight limits with scrap and ingot.
  • Responsible for maintaining cleanliness of remelt and holding furnaces and operation of flux machine.
  • Detect and report improper conditions, faulty equipment and defective material to proper supervisor.
  • Removes scrap containers from cast and trim area.
  • Ability to operate a forklift.
  • Delivers molten metal to individual furnace by the use of forklift.
  • Read, comprehend, and follow written, standardized work instructions and trained procedures to perform any furnace operation.
  • Ensure holding furnaces maintain at 100% operational level at all times.
  • Ensure remelt furnaces are maintained at 100% operational level at all times.
  • Visually inspect scrap hoppers for defected material and dispose of according to established procedures.
  • Accurately enter work orders into QAD.
  • Learn new tasks and adapt to frequent job duty changes which includes cross training as required by business and manpower demands.
  • Properly completes daily paperwork.
  • Work cooperatively with others in a team environment.
  • Maintain clean and orderly work area consistent with safety and work rules and regulations.
  • Work safely around and/or while operating heaving equipment or manufacturing machinery.
  • Work overtime hours as required and be available for emergency overtime when the need arises.
  • Regularly report for work on time with a desire to perform to the best of your abilities.
  • Perform Job Specific Training Form duties if available.
  • Other duties are assigned from time-to-time.

CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, and WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Possess good physical stamina and coordination. Specific physical requirements of the position include the ability to continuously and repetitively:
    • Walk and stand for prolonged periods of time.
    • Read standardized work instructions, operate machines and tools, and perform quality inspections.
    • Promptly detect and respond to visual and auditory safety instructions, alarms, and signals.
    • Wear personal protective equipment, for example: safety glasses, gloves, hard hat with face shield, ear plugs, long-sleeves, aluminized jacket and spats, and mid-calf steel-toed safety shoes.
    • Work in a loud manufacturing environment that is not climate controlled (conditions can be hot or cold).
    • Bend, push, pull, twist, and reach to perform work.
    • Ability to see clearly at close and distance ranges, distinguish colors, maintain peripheral vision, perceive depth, and adjust focus as necessary.
  • Frequently and repetitively:
    • Lift or carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds and periodically care or lift materials weighing up to 50lbs.
    • Use hand positioning to grip/grasp ingots or other equipment.
    • Ascending and descending forklifts, steps, stairs, and platforms.
    • Frequently sit when driving the forklift equipment.
  • Occasionally kneel, crouch, or crawl to perform work.
  • Recognizes potential exposure to mechanical, chemical, electrical, and explosive hazards.
