The Global Safety & Environment (GSE) organization is committed to protecting people, communities, and the environment while enabling the delivery of medicines and vaccines worldwide. This role, reporting to the Director, Remediation & Network within GSE's Environmental Compliance, Sustainability & Stewardship (ECSS) organization, provides leadership for global remediation programs and Decommissioning, Decontamination, and Demolition (DDD) activities in support of Network actions.

The Associate Director, Remediation & Network role is accountable for management of corporate environmental liabilities, execution of risk-informed remediation strategies, and coordination of SN36 requirements across the company network. The position partners with site teams, regional leaders, and cross-functional stakeholders to support compliant site closure, asset lifecycle transitions, and enterprise decision-making related to environmental risk and liability.

The Associate Director, Remediation & Network plays a critical role in aligning remediation and network activities with enterprise EHS priorities through strong program governance, stakeholder engagement, and disciplined data-driven decision-making.

Responsibilities:

  • The Associate Director, Remediation & Network will manage an Environmental Remediation Project portfolio of 5-10 projects globally with overall budget between $10.0MM - $25.0MM and an annual spend of approximately $2.0MM - $5.0MM USD in support of our Company's Environmental Liability Reserve. Additionally, the Remediation Associate Director must possess a level of expertise / ability to take an existing remedy-in-place and refine it to address high risk areas of concern, with a focus on driving the reduction of remedial timeframes and reducing the company's long-term environmental liability.

  • Provide support and expert advice to site personnel, Network teams and business leaders with respect to soil and groundwater contamination, equipment and facility decontamination and asset retirement obligations for a select portfolio of projects. The Associate Director, Remediation & Network will possess a specialized depth of knowledge and expertise in the area of soil and groundwater remediation and be able to not only manage a more complex portfolio of projects but also act as a resource for colleagues across multiple remedial disciplines.

  • For Network activities, support a portfolio of 8-12 sites in support of our company Network strategy to consolidate and streamline operations across manufacturing, research labs, and office buildings. Project specific, these activities typically range from approximately $10MM - $100MM.

  • Provide direct and technical oversight for the establishment of the DDD project scope and ensure execution is aligned with internal company expectations with respect to potent compounds, our Company's proprietary compounds and local regulations. Proactively identify risks, issues, and dependencies and drive mitigation actions. Serve as Safety and Environmental Subject Matter Expert and core team member for Network teams closing / selling / repurposing company sites and assets.

  • Lead cross-functional collaboration with site and regional EHS, Engineering, Finance, Legal, Real Estate, Public Affairs and other stakeholders to support Remediation and Network portfolios and business objectives. Must possess the ability to motivate their teams and use the perspectives of others to generate innovative and cost-effective solutions to remedial challenges.

  • Prepare project supporting documents (Corporate Environmental Liability Reserve estimates, Remediation Project One-Page Summaries, budget, scope and schedule) and present the most complex projects to senior leaders for approval. The Associate Director, Remediation & Network will also be required to develop / innovate / implement remediation strategies to comply with regulatory requirements and minimize liability (cost, regulatory, reputation) to the company.

  • Manage external consultants and contractors to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective outcomes.

  • Actively participate and represent EHS issues during site sale negotiations to ensure that company future liabilities (cost, regulatory, reputation) are minimized.

  • Support Due Diligence EHS activities during acquisition of properties / parcels at or near existing our Company facilities. Interpret results of Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments and use own discretion to make recommendations to GRES on path forward.

  • Adhere to all financial commitments and processes.

Position Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement

  • Bachelor's degree (BS/BA) in engineering, science, environmental, or related field required.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • 10+ years of experience in environmental remediation, EHS regulatory compliance, project management, site closure and/or decommissioning, preferably within a biopharmaceutical environment.

  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple complex projects across a variety of business units.

  • Strong technical knowledge of soil and groundwater remediation and environmental liability management.

  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills, ability to work transparently and independently and with a sense of urgency across various businesses and functions.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, risk assessment, and financial acumen capabilities.

  • Experience supporting due diligence and asset lifecycle decisions.

The salary range for this role is

$129,000.00 - $203,100.00

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, government requirements, and business or organizational needs.

The successful candidate will be eligible for annual bonus and long-term incentive, if applicable.
