Job Description

Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as onsite. The successful candidate is expected to report to their assigned GM worksite, five days per week and to respond to the site in the event of an emergency after hours, on weekend or holidays.

The Role:

In the Paint Process Engineering role, you will be responsible for design and/or testing of tooling and equipment and/or planning the manufacturing processes in the Paint area of the manufacturing plant. Work is of a technical nature where decisions are made within limits of general practices and procedures, but where supervision is available to assist during unusual situations. The job may include direct supervision of hourly employees and assigning work to a small group of employees.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Ensure that paint processes are maintained and running effectively for vehicle production.
  • Problem-solve (analyze data, determine root causes, develop implementation plans) and resolve issues which are affecting paint shop metrics and document appropriately.
  • Support implementation of new processes and equipment.
  • Communicate between shifts and departments to implement best practices, resolve problems, and sustain consistent performance to objectives.
  • Maintain process documentation.
  • Supervise all assigned indirect process personnel and production personnel.
  • Build and maintain working relationships with employees, union, management, and suppliers.
  • Proactively identify and pursue opportunities to improve operations by reducing costs, reducing energy usage, improving quality, etc.
  • Obey safety policy/procedures and lead by example.
  • Interface with production/maintenance personnel, plant leadership, and others outside the plant (Manufacturing Engineering, suppliers, etc.) as needed to resolve issues, implement improvements, and communicate status and opportunities.
  • Establish timing and action plans to complete jobs and/or projects.
  • Direct the design, development, and/or improvements of manufacturing processes and equipment for assigned areas.
  • Provide technical support for specific plant operations.
  • Coordinate input from internal and external customers to better understand customer needs and/or perceptions.
  • Actively identify new areas for learning and take advantage of learning opportunities.
  • Understand and execute Process Failure Mode Effects Analysis (PFMEA) and Process Control Plans.
  • Understand and actively participate within the GM Global Manufacturing System.
  • Be available to work any shift and overtime including extended hours and weekends.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Business Administration or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in automotive manufacturing.
  • Knowledge in Paint Manufacturing operations and/or Paint Manufacturing Engineering/Maintenance.
  • Experience coaching, teaching, and mentoring employees.
  • Experience managing teams.
  • Appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners to meet mutual goals.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, etc. as needed.
  • Must be comfortable working on all three shifts
  • Must be comfortable rotating between shifts

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Knowledge of Fanuc Paint Robots (P-500, P-700), PaintPro software, Versabell III.
  • Knowledge of Image Dispense Robots (M-710i, M-20iA) and Nordson-SEE shotmeters.
  • Knowledge of computer software as it pertains to manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of Red X, Six Sigma, or other problem-solving techniques.
  • Completion of the GM Paint Development Program.
