Relocation Finance information

What is relocation finance?

Relocation finance refers to the financial services and support provided to individuals or employees to help cover the costs associated with moving to a new location for work or personal reasons. This can include expenses such as transportation, temporary accommodation, moving services, and settling-in allowances. Companies often offer relocation finance as part of their employee benefits package to attract and retain talent, ensuring a smooth and less stressful transition for the employee. The specifics of relocation finance packages can vary depending on the employer, the distance of the move, and the employee’s role. Understanding the terms and eligibility requirements is important before making a move.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a relocation finance specialist?

To thrive as a Relocation Finance specialist, you need a strong background in finance, accounting, and relocation policies, typically supported by a relevant degree or certification such as CPA or CRP (Certified Relocation Professional). Familiarity with financial software, expense management systems, and global payroll tools is essential for managing complex transactions. Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help build trust with relocating employees and coordinate smoothly with stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate financial processing, compliance, and a positive relocation experience for both the company and its employees.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in relocation finance, and how can they be navigated successfully?

Professionals in Relocation Finance often encounter challenges such as managing complex budgets across different currencies, ensuring compliance with varying tax laws, and coordinating payments between multiple stakeholders. To navigate these successfully, it’s essential to maintain strong attention to detail, keep up-to-date with global financial regulations, and communicate clearly with HR, employees, and vendors. Leveraging specialized relocation management software can also streamline processes and reduce the risk of errors, making collaboration and tracking much more efficient.

Job description

Director of Finance - Kansas City, Missouri

The Moran Company is pleased to partner with the Jackson County Community Mental Health Fund to recruit the organization's Director of Finance.

Jackson County Community Mental Health Fund (CMHF) is a Missouri political subdivision managed by a Board of Trustees. CMHF was established following a ballot initiative approved by Jackson County voters in 1980, pursuant to Missouri State Statutes (sections RsMo 205.975-205.990), which allow a mental health tax levy to support a network of quality services for residents with mental illness.

Today, CMHF operates with a total annual contract portfolio of approximately $19 million, providing crucial mental health service budget supplements to more than 35 nonprofit network agencies. Collectively, these funded agencies serve over 20,000 uninsured and underinsured residents annually, of all ages and areas across Jackson County. CMHF's mission is to support a network of quality mental health services that are equitably accessible and responsive to the varied and unique needs of Jackson County residents. CMHF operates separately from County government, with the Board of Trustees providing fiscal oversight, strategy, governance, and policy approval, while the staff carries out day-to-day operations, quality assurance, and financial management.

County Community Mental Health Fund (CMHF) is seeking an experienced, strategic, and hands-on leader to serve as the Director of Finance. This critical leadership role serves as the Controller for CMHF, providing strategic stewardship, operational oversight, and financial management to ensure the organization's long-term sustainability and compliance. The Director of Finance is a key member of a three-person leadership team, working collaboratively with the Executive Director and Director of Programs to provide coordinated strategic leadership for the organization. The Director of Programs leads the organization's grantmaking programs, while the Director of Finance provides strategic stewardship and oversight of the organization's financial management and operational functions. The successful candidate ensures compliance with financial standards, develops systems and controls that support organizational efficiency, and guides budgeting, forecasting, and resource planning. In collaboration with the Executive Director, the Director of Finance oversees day-to-day operations, implements policies and processes, and monitors financial and operational performance to advance organizational goals and long-term sustainability.

The Director of Finance leads CMHF's financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, reporting, cash-flow management, accounts payable, audit coordination, and regulatory compliance in partnership with the organization's external CPA firm. It directs daily operations, implements policies and systems, and evaluates workflows, technology, and IT infrastructure to improve organizational efficiency and mission delivery. The role strengthens internal controls, identifies and mitigates operational risks, and leads process-improvement initiatives that enhance financial and operational performance. It also monitors key metrics and Tax Increment Financing (TIF) projects, prepares reports and analyses for leadership and the Board, and collaborates across the organization to support strategic decision-making, accountability, and continuous improvement.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, public administration, or a related field, along with 7–10 years of progressively responsible experience in financial management, operations, or organizational administration; an advanced degree or CPA designation is preferred. The successful candidate will bring strong expertise in budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, compliance, financial modeling, team leadership, and organizational systems, with nonprofit, public-sector, and Tax Increment Financing experience considered valuable. They should be an analytical, ethical, and collaborative leader with strong communication, problem-solving, organizational, and technology skills and the ability to explain complex financial information clearly to varied stakeholders.

The annual salary range for this position is $100,000 - $120,000, commensurate with experience. (Please note: No relocation assistance is provided for this role).

CMHF offers a competitive benefits package that includes:

  • employer-subsidized health
  • employer-subsidized dental
  • employer-subsidized vision
  • employer-subsidized life
  • employer-subsidized disability
  • employer-subsidized flexible spending benefits
  • generous paid time off
  • opportunity to work remotely up to two days per week after the probationary period
