What are some common challenges faced by Reliability Test Engineers during product validation?

Reliability Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as developing accurate test protocols that simulate real-world usage, managing tight project timelines, and troubleshooting unexpected product failures. Coordinating with cross-functional teams like design and manufacturing is essential to address issues identified during testing. Additionally, maintaining thorough documentation and adapting to evolving testing standards are critical aspects of ensuring products meet reliability requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Reliability Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Reliability Test Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, statistical analysis, and failure mode analysis, typically supported by a degree in electrical, mechanical, or materials engineering. Familiarity with reliability testing tools, data acquisition systems, and standards like MIL-STD-883 or ISO 9001 is commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate assessment of product durability, facilitate root cause analysis, and drive improvements in product quality and safety.

What does a Reliability Test Engineer do?

A Reliability Test Engineer is responsible for designing and conducting tests to ensure products and systems perform consistently and meet quality standards over time. They analyze product failures, identify root causes, and recommend improvements to enhance durability and reliability. Their work involves working closely with design, manufacturing, and quality teams, using various testing methods and data analysis to predict product lifespan and performance under different conditions. Overall, their goal is to minimize product failures and ensure customer satisfaction.

What is the difference between Reliability Test Engineer vs Test Engineer?

AspectReliability Test EngineerTest Engineer
Primary FocusAssessing product durability and long-term performance through reliability testingDesigning and executing tests to verify product functionality and performance
Required SkillsReliability analysis, testing methods, data analysis, certifications like ISTQBTest planning, scripting, troubleshooting, certifications like ISTQB
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, testing facilities, manufacturing settingsDevelopment labs, testing environments, quality assurance teams
Industry UsageElectronics, automotive, aerospace, manufacturingSoftware, electronics, manufacturing, product development

Reliability Test Engineers focus on evaluating the durability and long-term performance of products, while Test Engineers primarily verify that products meet functional specifications through various testing methods. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in overlapping industries, but their core objectives differ.

Job description

Role Summary
In this role, you willย driveย end-to-end reliability for ourย Solid-Stateย Transformerย (SST)ย platform, fromย conceptย toย fieldย deployment. You will lead cross-functional teams to mitigate program risks viaย Failure Mode and Effects Analysisย (DFMEA)/Fault Tree analysis (FTA)ย and set clear reliability benchmarks for supplier selection. Byย developingย advancedย Physics-of-failureย (PoF)ย modelingย and performing expert-level RCA, you will ensure our hardware meets the demandingย lifetimeย required for modern energy infrastructure.ย

Responsibilities:ย

  • Assist in the setup and execution of reliability test plans for SST's (solid state transformer), including thermal mapping and accelerated life testing.ย
  • Utilize statistical methods to analyze test data, identifying trends in component or system-level failures.ย
  • Participate in DFMEA sessions, helping to document risks and track mitigation actions.ย
  • Perform initial root-cause analysis on failed components using lab equipment (microscopes, X-ray, etc.) and coordinate with senior engineers on complex investigations.ย
  • Assist in building reliability block diagrams and basicย PoFย models to predict product lifetime.ย
  • Work closely with the Design and Manufacturing teams to communicate test results and ensure reliability targets are met.ย
  • Maintain detailed records of test procedures, lab results, and reliability reports for key milestones.ย
  • Ability to travel occasionally to different facilities to support hardware deployment and testing.ย

Qualifications:ย

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Reliability Engineering.ย
  • Strong understanding of hardware reliability or circuit analysis.ย
  • Basic familiarity with reliability statistics (Weibull distribution, MTBF) and a desire to master advanced Bayesian and Monte Carlo methods.ย
  • Comfortable working in a high-voltage lab environment; experience with basic diagnostic tools (Oscilloscopes, Multimeters).ย
  • Interest in learning reliability tools such as ReliaSoft (Weibull++, ALTA) or simulation software like Ansys Sherlock.ย
  • Nice to have proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or R for data processing and automation.ย
  • Excellent written and verbal skills; ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable updates for the team.ย
  • A "first principles" thinker who is eager to learn and thrives in a fast-paced hardware startup environment.ย

Please note:This role requires working on-site 5 days a week. We do not offer hybrid or remote options.ย
