Job description

Position Summary: The Sr. Reliability Engineer will work directly with the Mechanical Integrity group and lead the vessels and coolers inspection and testing program at the Hopewell, VA Plant.  This individual will work closely with field maintenance engineers, project engineers, operating area personnel, and all levels of the maintenance organization to ensure the safe, sustainable and stable operation of the Hopewell Plant. 


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Engineering support for field API 653, 650, 510 inspectors and NDE technicians in execution of mechanical integrity inspections of critical systems throughout the plant.
  • Provide root cause analysis of failed equipment and the mitigation steps for future inspections to eliminate the cause(s).
  • Maintain and look for ways to drive continuous improvement to the plant mechanical integrity inspection program(s).
  • Develop detailed repair/replacement recommendations based on inspection activities and ensure timely execution.
  • Work with maintenance execution and operations personnel to coordinate repair/replacement opportunities to minimize plant risk and maximize uptime through alignment with planned TAR events
  • Identify and utilize preferred equipment manufacturers, repair facilities and technical support consultants.
  • Develop and implement reliability and maintenance procedures for fixed equipment inspection and testing
  • Provide guidance on new inspection technology/methodology to drive consistency and repeatability into inspection program(s).
  • Responsible for developing mechanical integrity inspection scope year over year and coordination of inspection needs with operations personnel
  • Provide assistance with equipment performance troubleshooting as required.
  • Functional owner of the fixed equipment elements of the Inspection, Testing and Preventive Maintenance (ITPM) standards for OSHA 1910.119 Mechanical Integrity element of Process Safety Management (PSM)
  • Support new equipment design and installation and existing equipment upgrades by ensuring design-for-maintainability and reliability are incorporated into projects.
  • Develop and implement Reliability Control Plans (RCPs) for fixed equipment to drive long-term improvements in operational, safety and environmental performance.
  • Advise, review and approve temporary repairs and modifications to equipment – for code compliance.

 Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • At least 5 years experience (7-10 preferred) in chemical/petrochemical plant maintenance and/or reliability engineering
  • A working knowledge of API/ASME standards that pertain to process plant equipment
    • Specifically, ASME Section I (Power boilers), ASME section VIII (Pressure vessels) design requirements.
    • API 510, 653, 650 inspection, testing, and repair requirements


Additional Qualifications:

  • Familiarity interpreting and applying national codes and standards governing the design and maintenance of pressure vessels, boilers, relief devices, tanks and piping (NBIC, ASME, API, NCE, ANSI) preferred
  • National Board AI or IS commission preferred, with R endorsement
  • Risk Based Inspection (RBI), API 580 working knowledge
  • A working knowledge of equipment design, selection, repairs and performance assessment preferred
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills preferred
  • Well-rounded field experience applying maintenance engineering principals to mechanical repairs on process equipment preferred
  • Excellent organizational, planning and verbal/written communication skills preferred
  • Self-motivated and goal-oriented individual with proven success working independently and in a multi-functional team environment preferred
  • Experience inspecting and designing repairs for fixed equipment (pressure vessels, atmospheric storage tanks, piping) preferred
  • Ability to perform physical tasks in an industrial plant environment including, but not limited to climbing ladders and performing confined space entries
  • Practical experience facilitating Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) utilizing a selection of industry standard tools
  • Knowledge of engineering materials, chemical compatibility and application as it relates to plant equipment reliability
  • Experience leading cross functional, technically oriented teams
  • Hands-on experience using SAP work management system and APM systems like Meridium preferred
  • Experience with maintenance work execution/supervision in a unionized environment preferred
  • Proficient use of MS Office Suite of software products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) preferred
  • Six Sigma Green Belt Certified preferred

The range for the base salary is $95,000 to $142,600.
