What are Reliability Engineers?

Reliability Engineers are professionals who focus on ensuring that systems, equipment, and processes perform reliably and efficiently over their expected lifespan. They analyze failure data, develop maintenance strategies, and implement improvements to enhance system availability and minimize downtime. In various industries, such as manufacturing, energy, or technology, Reliability Engineers play a key role in optimizing performance and reducing costs associated with unexpected failures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Reliability Engineer CRE, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Reliability Engineer CRE, you need a solid background in engineering principles, reliability analysis, and often a Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) credential from ASQ. Familiarity with tools like FMEA, Root Cause Analysis, reliability modeling software, and statistical analysis systems is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in collaborating with teams and presenting findings. These skills ensure the development and maintenance of reliable systems, minimizing downtime and optimizing operational efficiency.

What is the difference between Reliability Engineer Cre vs Reliability Engineer?

AspectReliability Engineer CreReliability Engineer
CertificationsASQ CRE, Six Sigma, Reliability certificationsSimilar certifications, often including ASQ CRE or Six Sigma
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, industrial plants, energy sectorsManufacturing, industrial, aerospace, energy sectors
Employer UsageUsed by companies focusing on reliability and maintenanceUsed broadly across industries for system and equipment reliability

Reliability Engineer Cre and Reliability Engineer roles share similar credentials and work environments, often overlapping in manufacturing and industrial sectors. The main difference lies in the Cre certification focus, emphasizing reliability and maintenance strategies. Both roles aim to improve system performance and reduce downtime, making them highly comparable in industry applications.

How does a Reliability Engineer CRE typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve system performance?

Reliability Engineers CRE frequently work alongside design, maintenance, operations, and quality teams to identify failure patterns and implement corrective actions. They lead root cause analyses and facilitate reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) workshops, ensuring that data-driven insights guide decision-making. Effective collaboration helps align reliability goals with overall business objectives, leading to more robust processes and reduced downtime. Being proactive in communication and documentation is key to successfully driving improvements across departments.

Job description

Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) - Consulting Role (70% Travel | 1099 Contract)
Location: Nationwide (Travel M-F required)
Engagement Type: 1099 Independent ConsultantAt Implementation Engineers, we don't just consult -- we embed, transform, and build sustainable operations from within.
Implementation Engineers is seeking a Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) with deep manufacturing experience to join our Asset Performance Excellence practice. This is not a training ground -- it's a high-impact role for professionals who've led asset performance initiatives in plants where downtime isn't just expensive -- it's unacceptable. We embed within client operations to improve reliability, reduce maintenance costs, and create sustainable systems for asset management. If you're looking for meaningful work, national exposure, and the chance to partner with top-tier clients, this is the opportunity for you.
What You'll Do
  • Lead RCA, FMEA, and criticality assessments to eliminate recurring failures
  • Develop and implement PdM, PM, and CBM strategies using best-in-class reliability tools
  • Apply Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) across complex equipment environments
  • Analyze failure trends and equipment performance using CMMS data, historian systems, and Weibull/Barriger modeling
  • Optimize spare part inventory, lubrication schedules, and maintenance procedures
  • Support new equipment purchases and capital projects from a reliability engineering perspective
  • Build and track performance metrics such as MTBF, MTTR, OEE, and availability.

What We Require
  • Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) - ASQ certification is required
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in reliability or asset management within discrete manufacturing, industrial production, or heavy industry
  • Bachelor's in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering (Master's preferred)
  • Deep working knowledge of CMMS systems (e.g., SAP, Maximo, Infor) and condition monitoring (vibration, thermography, oil analysis)
  • CMRP certification strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with Six Sigma, Lean, TPM, or similar methodologies
  • Previous consulting experience strongly preferred
  • PLEASE NOTE: This role requires 70% travel (Monday through Friday) and is structured as a 1099 contract engagement. Candidates must be fully comfortable with frequent, nationwide travel.

How We Deliver at Implementation Engineers
  • Act as a Change Agent by supporting clients in adopting and sustaining improvements through clear communication, coaching, and engagement, following Implementation Engineers' change management best practices.
  • Apply Project Management Best Practices to plan, execute, and monitor project activities using IE's standard delivery processes and tools.
  • Operate Within IE Governance and Standards, including:
    • Maintaining an up-to-date and actively managed project plan;
    • Following established change management processes;
    • Ensuring consistent, proactive communication with key stakeholders.
  • Maintain Program Transparency by keeping project documentation current, organized, and accessible within IE's Program Collaboration Workspace.
  • Leverage IE Governance Tools such as Smartsheet and Microsoft Teams for effective planning, tracking, collaboration, and reporting.

Why Join Us?
  • Visible work, lasting impact. We don't do theory -- we execute.
  • Client-facing, hands-on role. You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with operations teams on-site.
  • Flat structure, fast decisions. Your ideas won't sit in a queue -- they'll drive action.
  • Collaborative team of experts. Join a practice that attracts and retains the best in the reliability field.

If you meet the criteria, we want to meet you.
  • Apply today to bring your reliability expertise to the next level.
