The Reliability Director focuses on strategic leadership, overseeing reliability programs and managing teams, while the Reliability Engineer handles technical analysis, equipment maintenance, and reliability improvements. Both roles are vital in ensuring operational efficiency but differ in scope and responsibilities.

What does a reliability director do?

A Reliability Director is responsible for overseeing and improving the reliability and performance of systems, equipment, or processes within an organization. They lead teams to develop and implement maintenance strategies, analyze failure data, and ensure that assets run efficiently with minimal downtime. This role often involves collaborating with other departments to promote best practices and drive a culture of continuous improvement. The Reliability Director also monitors key performance indicators and leads initiatives to reduce operational risks and costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a reliability director?

To thrive as a Reliability Director, you need deep expertise in reliability engineering principles, asset management, and a relevant engineering degree, often complemented by certifications like Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE). Familiarity with reliability software (such as ReliaSoft or RAM analysis tools), root cause analysis methodologies, and CMMS systems is typically required. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and excellent communication skills help drive cross-functional teams and foster a culture of continuous improvement. These skills ensure optimal equipment uptime, cost efficiency, and long-term operational success.

Job description

Job Title: Reliability Technician / Lab Product Testing EngineerJob Description

The Reliability Technician / Lab Product Testing Engineer plays a key role in a small engineering lab, working with an experienced cross-disciplinary team to design, execute, and refine product reliability and environmental tests. This role partners closely with design engineers to define test parameters, develop testing procedures and methodologies, and drive test execution from setup through reporting. You will manage multiple tests simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, quickly learn new skills to meet evolving customer needs, and clearly document and communicate test findings through detailed reports and direct collaboration with engineering stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with design engineers and cross-functional teams to define test parameters, objectives, and methodologies for hardware reliability and environmental testing.
  • Research, design, set up, and manage multiple tests simultaneously, ensuring accurate configuration and execution in a fast-paced lab environment.
  • Perform hardware reliability and environmental tests, including HALT, temperature and humidity testing, temperature cycling, shock, drop, vibration, salt fog/spray, and UV exposure.
  • Design experiments to measure and collect test data using accelerometers, thermocouples, strain gauges, and similar sensors.
  • Set up and operate electrical and electronic test equipment such as digital multimeters, data loggers, oscilloscopes, and related instrumentation.
  • Use and debug PowerShell scripts and other scripting tools to support test automation, data collection, and test system control.
  • Document test setups, procedures, and results thoroughly, and write clear, detailed test reports for engineering and project stakeholders.
  • Communicate findings directly to engineers, presenting data, observations, and recommendations in a concise and understandable manner.
  • Apply basic electric and electronic theory to perform wiring and cable installation, as well as electrical troubleshooting of test setups.
  • Support the development and refinement of automated testing systems to improve efficiency, repeatability, and data quality.
  • Work within a cross-functional team environment, accommodating flexible workloads and shifting priorities across multiple projects.
  • Conduct failure analysis activities and sample preparation, including mechanical cross-sectioning, to help identify root causes of issues.
  • Research and identify required specifications, standards, and test criteria relevant to products and test programs.
  • Read and interpret schematics and circuit drawings to understand product designs and ensure correct test configurations.
  • Leverage software tools such as Office applications, LabVIEW, MATLAB, scripting/programming environments (e.g., VBA, Python, C#, Perl), JMP, or Minitab to analyze data, automate tests, and prepare reports.
Essential Skills
  • Hands-on experience working in hardware reliability testing, environmental testing, aerospace testing, or a closely related field, including exposure to HALT, temperature and humidity testing, temperature cycling, shock, drop, vibration, salt fog/spray, and UV exposure.
  • Experience using and debugging PowerShell scripts to support testing and data collection activities.
  • Proven ability to design experiments that measure and collect test data using accelerometers, thermocouples, strain gauges, and similar sensors.
  • Solid understanding of basic electric and electronic theory, with the ability to perform basic wiring and cable installation and conduct electrical troubleshooting.
  • Experience setting up and using electrical and electronic test equipment such as digital multimeters, data loggers, oscilloscopes, and related tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, structured, and detailed test reports that accurately capture procedures, results, and conclusions.
  • Experience working as an engineering hardware technician or electro-mechanical engineering technician in a lab or testing environment.
  • Proficiency in reliability testing concepts and practices, including test planning, execution, and data documentation.
  • Ability to learn new skills quickly and adapt to changing customer and project requirements.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to document and present findings directly to engineers and cross-functional partners.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment and accommodate flexible project loading and shifting priorities.
  • Experience with failure analysis and sample preparation techniques, such as mechanical cross-sectioning.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and identify required specifications and standards for products and testing.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and circuit drawings to understand product designs and test requirements.
  • Experience in designing and developing automated testing systems to improve efficiency and repeatability.
  • Proficiency with office productivity tools and technical software such as LabVIEW, MATLAB, and data analysis or scripting environments (e.g., VBA, Python, C#, Perl).
  • Experience using statistical and data analysis tools such as JMP or Minitab to analyze test results and support decision-making.
  • Comfort working in an engineering hardware lab environment as an engineering technician with electro-mechanical responsibilities.
Work Environment

This role is based in a small engineering lab environment that supports multiple projects and test programs, including work related to fulfillment center operations. You will work closely with a cross-disciplinary engineering team, handling a variety of hardware reliability and environmental tests in a fast-paced setting. The lab is equipped with electrical and electronic test instruments such as digital multimeters, data loggers, oscilloscopes, and specialized reliability test equipment for HALT, temperature and humidity testing, temperature cycling, shock, drop, vibration, salt fog/spray, and UV exposure. The work involves hands-on setup and operation of test rigs, sensors, and wiring, as well as use of scripting and data analysis tools.
