Job description

About us
Relay is a cross-chain payments protocol that provides instant, low-cost cross-chain bridging, swaps, and transactions. We're the fastest and cheapest way to bridge and transact across chains, serving over 5 million users who have completed 59+ million transactions with $6+ billion in volume across 85+ chains.
Our company mission is to make transacting across chains as fast, cheap, and reliable as online payments. We are building the core infrastructure to abstract chains from end user payments, enabling the next billion users to experience the benefits of blockchain without the UX burdens.
About the role
As Relay scales, security and reliability deserve a dedicated owner. We're looking for a Security Engineer who will define and protect the worry-free infrastructure that millions of users depend on.
What you'll do
Own Relay's security posture
  • Lead threat modeling, vulnerability management, access controls, and dependency auditing
  • Map Relay's attack surface and document gaps
  • Harden CI/CD pipelines, secrets management, and least-privilege access

Build and maintain observability
  • Instrument monitoring, alerting, and dashboards that give the team real-time visibility into Relay's health
  • Define and enforce SLOs by setting availability and performance targets, and drive the team to meet them

Lead incident response
  • Own the incident response process end to end: triage when things break, run postmortems, and make sure the same issue doesn't happen twice

Drive compliance readiness
  • Prepare Relay for customer security reviews and formal certifications (SOC 2, etc.)
  • Embed security and reliability practices into team culture as we grow
About you
  • You're someone who owns outcomes, not just tasks
  • You proactively identify risks before they become issues
  • You're calm under pressure, a structured thinker during incidents, and a clear communicator when it matters most
  • You're comfortable working autonomously and know how to prioritize what matters most
  • You're excited about blockchain and understand the unique security demands of the space

Skills and abilities
Must-have
  • 3+ years operating production infrastructure on AWS
  • Hands-on experience with security fundamentals including vulnerability management, access control, secrets management, and network security
  • Experience in crypto/blockchain infrastructure
  • Strong background in observability tooling (Datadog, PagerDuty, or similar)
  • Experience defining and operating against SLOs

Nice to have
  • Experience leading or contributing to SOC 2 or similar compliance certifications
  • Background in smart contract security or wallet/key management infrastructure
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform)
  • Prior experience as a first security/reliability hire at a startup
  • Relevant certifications (AWS Security Specialty, CISSP, etc.)
What we offer
  • Competitive base salary
  • Equity package
  • Comprehensive health benefits
  • Unlimited PTO policy with encouraged minimum
  • Remote-first culture with emphasis on collaboration, communication, and flexibility
