Job description

Responsibilities*
The Neuromuscular & Rehabilitation Robotics (NeuRRo) lab (http://neurro-lab.engin.umich.edu/) at the University of Michigan is looking for two talented and highly motivated applicants as postdoctoral fellows within the Med School. The candidates will work under the mentorship of Prof. Chandramouli Krishnan, PT, PhD. The position is a temporary position for a maximum of 2 years, renewable annually based on performance.
The position will provide opportunities for the candidate to gain experience and expertise in the field of Physical Rehabilitation with a special emphasis on Robotics, Clinical Trials, Human Movement Control, and Neuroplasticity. The NeuRRo Lab is housed within the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is directed by Dr. Chandramouli Krishnan, P.T., Ph.D. Research in the NeuRRo Lab involves both mechanistic and interventional studies to facilitate our current understanding of neuromuscular function and regulation in the context of movement control and neuromuscular plasticity. Specifically, the lab has a particular interest in developing and testing low-cost technologies for the assessment and treatment of neurological and orthopedic conditions. The candidate will be expected to contribute to these research goals and interests.
The ideal candidate for this position would have a background in Physical Therapy, Kinesiology, Movement Science, or Engineering with a Ph.D. The candidate should have substantial experience in human subjects experiments and expertise in 3D Motion Capture, Gait Analysis, strength and movement control testing, and scientific writing skills. Programming (e.g., Matlab, LabVIEW, etc.) skills are desired and would be highly beneficial for this position.
In addition to the technical and scientific writing skills outlined above, ideal candidates should have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and must thrive in both a team and individual environment. The candidate must also have strong organizational and communication skills.
Responsibilities
Conduct Independent and guided research projects that are assigned to the candidate.
Participate in and lead all aspects of clinical and biomechanical research, including subject recruitment, scheduling, data collection, processing, and data dissemination.
Ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of the University of Michigan.
Develop a good understanding of the software and hardware technologies that are used for conducting the required experiments.
Writing IRB applications to receive approval for Human Subjects Experiments.
Collect and analyze data, including periodic literature searches, and utilize specialized skills to analyze the collected data.
Participate and assist in manuscript writing for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals and/or presentations and assist in grant writing.
Participate regularly in lab meetings and teach and mentor the graduate and undergraduate students in the lab.
Assist in lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance, and ordering of supplies and materials as needed.
Required Qualifications*
  • Ph.D. in Physical Therapy, Kinesiology, Engineering, or related sciences
  • Significant experience with human subjects' research and clinical trials
  • Knowledge of stroke and neurorehabilitation
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and organization skills
  • Experience with EMG, Motion Capture, Strength Testing, and Neurophysiological assessments (e.g., TMS, H-Reflex, etc.)
  • Experience with manuscript writing, proposal writing, and development of study protocols
  • Able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Programming experience preferred (e.g., LabVIEW, Matlab, etc.)

  • Availability on weekends/off-hours if needed because of the longitudinal nature of some of the studies
