What is a rehab intern?

Rehab Interns are students or recent graduates who work under the supervision of licensed rehabilitation professionals to gain practical experience in rehabilitation settings, such as hospitals, clinics, or nursing facilities. Their responsibilities often include assisting with patient care, observing therapy sessions, performing administrative tasks, and learning about rehabilitation practices. This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience and exposure to various rehabilitation disciplines like physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy, helping interns develop essential skills for their future careers.

What tasks and responsibilities does a rehab intern have?

As a Rehab Intern, you will typically support licensed rehabilitation professionals such as physical or occupational therapists by assisting with patient exercises, preparing treatment areas, documenting patient progress, and helping with administrative duties. You may also observe patient assessments and learn to communicate effectively with both patients and the rehab team. This hands-on experience helps you understand clinical workflows, develop interpersonal skills, and gain insight into various rehabilitation techniques. Most internships emphasize collaboration and learning, so you’ll work closely with supervisors and, at times, multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a rehab intern?

To thrive as a Rehab Intern, you need a foundational understanding of rehabilitation principles, human anatomy, and therapeutic techniques, often gained through relevant coursework in physical therapy or occupational therapy programs. Familiarity with rehabilitation equipment, electronic health records, and basic patient documentation systems is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and a willingness to learn are essential soft skills for engaging with patients and collaborating with healthcare teams. These skills ensure safe, effective patient care and facilitate professional growth in a clinical rehabilitation environment.
