About the Role:

The Controller in the construction industry plays a critical role in overseeing the financial health and integrity of the organization. This position is responsible for managing all accounting operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting, to ensure accurate and timely financial information is available for decision-making. The Controller will lead the development and implementation of internal controls and financial policies to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Collaborating closely with project managers and executive leadership, the Controller provides financial insights that support strategic planning and operational efficiency. Ultimately, this role ensures the company’s financial practices align with industry standards and contribute to sustainable growth and profitability.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within the construction industry.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated experience managing financial statements, budgeting, and internal controls.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation.
  • Experience with construction-specific accounting software such as Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate or Viewpoint.
  • Familiarity with project cost accounting and job costing methodologies.
  • Experience leading and developing accounting teams.
  • Knowledge of federal and state tax regulations applicable to the construction industry.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and oversee all daily accounting operations including accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, and bank reconciliations.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports in accordance with GAAP and company policies.
  • Develop and monitor budgets and forecasts, analyzing variances and providing actionable recommendations to management.
  • Implement and maintain internal controls to ensure accuracy and compliance with financial regulations and company standards.
  • Coordinate and support external audits and tax filings, ensuring timely and accurate submissions.
  • Collaborate with project managers to track project costs, analyze financial performance, and optimize resource allocation.
  • Lead and mentor the accounting team, fostering professional development and ensuring high-quality work output.
  • Evaluate and improve financial systems and processes to enhance efficiency and data integrity.
