Job description

Position Overview

Position: UC Cooperative Extension Livestock and Natural Resources Advisor Location: Mariposa and Merced counties, California. The role involves implementing extension education and applied research programs in livestock production systems, including grazing management, pasture and range management, nutrition, herd health, animal husbandry, genetic selection, reproduction, harvesting/processing, and marketing.

Position Details

The Advisor will collaborate with consumer farmers, other University of California Extension advisors, campus specialists, faculty, and county stakeholders to develop outreach programs and research addressing regional livestock challenges. This includes improving livestock production, animal health, range and pasture improvement, meat processing, and marketing, as well as water and soil quality and ecosystem health. Cattle are the primary species, with secondary work with sheep, goats, and small‑scale poultry.

Collaborations

Collaborations include UC Davis Department of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine, ANR Program Teams (Meat Production and Food Safety, Forest and Rangeland Systems, Diversified Farming and Food Systems), and other water, natural resources, and crop production programs.

Reporting Relationship

The Advisor reports to the University of California Cooperative Extension Area County Director for Mariposa and Merced Counties.

Qualifications and Skills Required Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in animal science, range management, or a closely related field (or equivalent coursework for a Certified Rangeland Manager); or certification as a Certified Rangeland Manager.
  • Ability to travel on a flexible schedule; proof of liability and property damage insurance on the vehicle used is required; must possess a valid California driver’s license to operate a county or university vehicle.
  • Extension experience and demonstrated excellence in applied research.
  • Coursework and experience in range management and livestock production.
  • Training and experience in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research and collaboration.
  • Familiarity with California natural resources.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated use of remote outreach methods.
  • Background investigation, including fingerprinting and criminal history clearance, required.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship; applicants must maintain legal work authorization during the position.
  • This is not a remote position; the Advisor must work onsite in Mariposa and Merced Counties.
Additional Skills Required
  • Interest in pursuing a career in UC Cooperative Extension.
  • Experience meeting appointment criteria for the University of California academic title series and demonstrating advancement criteria (research, extension, teaching, scholarly achievements).
  • Substantial experience and sensitivity to cultural differences when working with youth and adults.
  • Ability to work with clientele across varied socio‑economic classes and ethnicities.
  • Excellence in written, oral, interpersonal, and information technology communication skills; Spanish language proficiency desired.
  • Collaboration, teamwork, and flexibility when working with external stakeholders and county staff.
  • Lifelong learning mindset; ability to evolve and grow throughout career.
  • Disclosure of any recent misconduct, ongoing investigation, or prior administrative/judicial decisions as required by law.
Salary and Benefits

Assistant Rank, Step I ($85,600) to Step VI ($105,200). Step placement is based on experience and qualifications. Eligible for indefinite status following three reviews. Benefits include 2 days of paid vacation per month, 1 day of paid sick leave per month, paid holidays, and eligibility for sabbatical leave. The position is part of UC’s Family‑Friendly Policies.
